In emergency situations, drivers have to give way to rescue workers.
In the city this can be a challenge.
Anyone who behaves incorrectly risks accidents.
If traffic comes to a standstill on a motorway or a road with at least two lanes (in each direction) outside built-up areas, an emergency lane is mandatory.
Anyone who doesn't comply will receive a fine.
This obligation does not apply in urban areas, but drivers must immediately give way to emergency services in an emergency.
However, caution is advised.
According to the
German Road Safety Council (DVR),
many drivers make the mistake of braking suddenly.
In addition to rear-end collisions, they also risk impeding the emergency services, who rely on flashing lights and sirens.

Emergency lane in the city: You are allowed to enter the intersection when the light is red
The right reaction therefore depends on the respective situation.
At a red light it is relatively easy to make room by pulling over.
“If the path cannot be cleared by pulling over to the right, carefully entering an intersection when the red light is on is permitted in exceptional cases,” explains the
ADAC
in a comment on Instagram.

If the traffic light is green, the
DVR
advises you not to simply drive into the intersection as soon as you hear the siren.
It is better to signal right, reduce speed and drive to the right side of the road to stop.

Emergency lane in the city: The same rules apply on multi-lane roads as on the motorway
However, if an emergency vehicle approaches a main road with at least two lanes in one direction, it behaves similarly to a motorway.
This means that the middle of the road must be kept clear so that emergency services can pass.
On a three-lane roadway, drivers must form an alley between the left lane and all adjacent lanes.
As with the motorway, the hard shoulder may not be used.
