An outbreak of gastroenteritis of unknown origin is affecting a Cunard Cruise Line ship, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a press release.
Nearly 140 passengers and crew members were placed in quarantine to prevent the epidemic from spreading to the hundreds of people on board.

The "Queen Victoria", which carries 1,824 passengers and 967 crew members, is the subject of a gastroenteritis epidemic.
The ship departed from Southampton, England on January 11 and is scheduled to arrive in Hawaii on February 12.

So far, 123 passengers and 16 crew members have reported being affected by the disease, representing 6.74 and 1.65% of those on board, respectively.
Centers for discomfort control and prevention (CDC) specifies that the predominant symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting.
For the moment, the health agency says, the origin of the virus is unknown.

Sick people were isolated from the rest of the passengers in order to prevent any spread of the epidemic.
The company has also taken additional measures in terms of cleaning and disinfection of the boat.

The CDC also assures that the number of active cases declared does not constitute the number of symptomatic patients who will arrive on February 12.
