The German car company Volkswagen has announced investments of 9 billion reais (1.7 billion euros) in Brazil by 2028. The program - presented by the CEO of the company in Brazil Ciro Pensobom during a press conference - will be explained in detail today to the president , Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, during a visit to the San Bernardo do Campo plant, in the state of Sao Paulo.


   The new industrial plan mainly includes the production of hybrid cars with the company's stated goal of reducing emissions from both its cars and its factories to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050. Volkswagen revealed that it will launch 16 models by 2028. Production of electric vehicles in the country is expected to be delayed until the end of the decade, as it depends on a supply chain not yet prepared for the demand.

The current investment cycle - started in 2022 and scheduled to end in 2026 - was 7 billion reais (1.3 billion euros).

In this way, the total amount invested by the company in Brazil will be 16 billion reais (3 billion euros) over the next 5 years.

"Volkswagen reaffirms its trust in Brazil and more than doubles its investments to 16 billion reais", declared Pensobom, confirming that initially the new contribution already envisages the development and production of innovative projects focused on decarbonisation for the four factories in the country". With the planned allocations, Volkswagen becomes the car manufacturer with the largest investment in Brazil in the post-pandemic period, after having recorded a growth in sales volume in the country of 29.5% in 2023, a result with which it consolidated a market share of 15.8 %.
