Stabbed in the chest mid-match.
An Argentine football fan died on Saturday on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, during a brawl in a stadium where a second division championship match was taking place, local press reported.
The victim, aged 43, was stabbed shortly before half-time of the match won by the local team Chacarita against Deportivo Maipu (2-0).
According to the investigation, the man found himself involved in a general fight which broke out in the stand before continuing into the corridors of the sports venue where he was fatally injured.
Transferred to hospital, he died of cardiac arrest.
A fact “which has nothing to do with supporter groups”
Police used footage from stadium security cameras to try to identify the perpetrator of the fatal blow.
According to the authorities, the brawl did not originate from clashes between rival bands of supporters, an endemic evil in Argentina where violence in football has caused more than 300 deaths.
“This is a completely isolated fact which has nothing to do with the fan groups” but which occurred “after the consumption of a large quantity of alcoholic drinks and drugs”, explained to the press Guillermo Cimadevila, head of the Agency for the Prevention of Violence in Sport.
