Highlights: Since the beginning of 2024, 33 people have already been killed in traffic accidents on Israeli roads, a further increase of 6%, after a 3% increase in 2023. Less than 50% of the students receive road safety training as part of the 12th shift. In the previous school year, about 19% of approved classes did not receive training, even though they were approved. The main factor for the partial training is the dismal state of the Zahab system in the police which includes only 13 designated standards and another 149 police officers who perform Zahab training which is not the core of their job.

Members of the Knesset Boaz Toporovski and Zvika Vogel, the chairmen of the committees for road safety and national security, demand from Galant and Ben Gvir more soldier-police standards for the benefit of training students

Since the beginning of 2024, 33 people have already been killed in traffic accidents on Israeli roads, a further increase of 6%, after a 3% increase in 2023.

One of the state's ongoing failures in this area is the degeneration of the safety patrols, the activity of the senior classes of the elementary schools for the safe crossing of roads for the students of the lower grades, while acquiring an understanding and experience in road safety that will serve them themselves as pedestrians, as cyclists and in the future as drivers

. The head of the committees for the promotion of road safety and national security, to the ministers of defense and national security in an urgent request to assign additional standards of soldiers on compulsory service (SHAM) to the police so that it will be possible to save the 2nd Guards.

In their joint letter to ministers Yoav Galant and Itamar Ben Gabir, Knesset members Boaz Toporovsky and Zvika Fogel, because due to the manpower shortage, less than 50% of the students receive road safety training as part of the 12th shift.

The road safety patrol program has been operating in schools across the country for 50 years and has been praised by foreign experts for strengthening the responsibility of young boys to improve safety and care for their young friends.

As part of the program, the 5th grade students undergo safety training and in the 6th grade they take care of their school environment themselves.

Members of Knesset Toporovski and Fogel stated that despite the fact that in the schools where the program operates, a decrease in traffic accidents around the school is reported, as of today due to a lack of personnel, the total number of classes approved for training is 2,434, out of a potential of 5,600 classes, less than 50% of the classes .

Moreover, in the previous school year, about 19% of approved classes did not receive training, even though they were approved.

The main factor for the partial training is the dismal state of the Zahab system in the police which includes only 13 designated standards and another 149 police officers who perform Zahab training which is not the core of their job.

Knesset members Toporovski and Vogel added that the need to strengthen the Zahab training system came up again and again in the discussions of the committees headed by them, and that the recruitment of Zahab police officers within the framework of additional Shaman standards, could help recruit populations that at best would not enlist in the IDF or any other national service.

That's why Knesset members Toporovski and Vogel called on the Minister of Defense to increase the standards of security officers by 15 standards and subject to the approval of the Minister of Defense and the Minister of National Security - to assign them to the Golden Guards unit of the Israel Police.

"Public safety is also required on the roads.

The safety of our children is also required in their educational institutions.

Even in times of national stress and in the midst of wars, there is a consistent increase in road deaths, so we must act now," Tofurovsky and Fogel wrote to the ministers.

Attorney Yaniv Yaakov, CEO of the Or Yerok Association, notes that in 2023, 37 children were killed in road accidents - the highest figure in - 13 The last sky. According to him, "Children are a vulnerable population especially when they walk, so the way to school and its surroundings must be safe for them.

The Golden Guards are a first-class safety solution and also carry an important community and voluntary value.

The figure that only half of the educational institutions in Israel have gold guards is serious and dangerous, and therefore action must be taken to expand and increase the scope of the gold guards.

In the current state of the police, the safety of our children must not be neglected, therefore action must be taken as soon as possible to train the police officers of the Israel Police in order to continue this important project and expand it to as many educational institutions as possible. This solution is the order of the hour which will strengthen the safety of our children and prevent injury and loss in traffic accidents." .
