Paris increases parking fees for SUVs and off-road vehicles: less than 10 percent turnout
The city administration was able to push through its proposal to charge 18 euros instead of the usual 6 euros for parking SUVs and other heavy vehicles in the city center for one hour.
In the suburbs the price increases to 12 euros instead of the previous 4 euros.
A fee of 225 euros will be charged for six hours of parking in the center instead of the previous 75 euros.
The new regulation comes into force from September 1st.
From September, SUV drivers in Paris will pay higher parking fees.

Around 1.3 million residents of the capital were asked to vote under the motto “More or less SUV in Paris?”
About 54.5 percent voted in favor of increasing parking fees, while about 45.5 percent were against it.
However, voter turnout was only just under six percent.
The city administration rejected objections that the result was hardly representative due to the low participation.
Ultimately, tens of thousands of citizens took advantage of the opportunity to participate directly.

However, the new expensive tariff does not apply to all SUV owners, but only to visitors to Paris.
Residents as well as tradesmen and care services should be exempt from this.
The tariff should apply to combustion and hybrid models weighing from 1.6 tonnes and electric models from two tonnes.
Private parking garages are exempt from the regulation.
