He will be incarcerated in a French prison.
Salah Abdeslam was taken from his cell in Belgium and sent back to France, according to his lawyer this Wednesday.
He had been detained in Belgium since his trial for the Brussels attacks.
Belgian justice had blocked his transfer to France, which wanted him to serve his sentence for the November 13 attacks.
Last September, Belgian justice rejected a request made by Salah Abdeslam, who wanted not to return to prison in France.
He maintained that he wanted to remain in detention in Belgium in particular because his entire family resides there, and that remaining a prisoner in France would deprive him of any “hope of reintegration”.
Incompressible perpetuity
The only surviving member of the commandos who attacked Paris on November 13, 2015, Salah Abdeslam was sentenced in June 2022 in France to irreducible life imprisonment for his participation in these attacks.
This sentence implies that he will only be able to request a sentence modification after thirty years in prison, i.e. at the earliest in 2046.
In Brussels, in a trial started in December 2022, he was declared co-perpetrator of the suicide attacks of March 22, 2016 killing 35 people, also claimed by the Islamic State organization.
