New cars are becoming more and more expensive: electric cars are increasing in price

A look at the past shows how drastically prices have changed.

In 1974, a new car cost an average of 5,320 euros.

Twenty years later it was already 17,690 euros.

By 2014 the purchase price had climbed to 28,330 euros.

But why are new cars always expensive?

There are various reasons for this.

On the one hand, it is an average price and this also includes electric cars.

And they are often significantly more expensive than a car with a diesel or gasoline engine.

As

Bild

writes, the average electric car cost 50,060 euros.

For the combustion engine, an average of 41,340 euros was due.

However, numerous affordable electric vehicles will come onto the market in the next few years.

New cars are becoming more and more expensive: the shrinking range of small cars is causing prices to rise

In addition, the range of small cars continues to shrink.

Ford recently pulled the plug on the Fiesta.

And Audi has also retired the A1 and the Q2.

At Kia it hit the Rio.

As the ADAC criticized in July 2023, there are only four models left for less than 15,000 euros.

This also affects the average price.

But other aspects also affect the purchase price of new cars.

This includes:

  • Green license plate: Which vehicles get it and which regulations apply. Read

  • Driving safety assistance systems: More and more helpers are becoming mandatory.

From summer 2024, the ISA speed assistant will be mandatory in all new cars and a black box must then also be on board.

Driving safety assistance systems cost money and require cameras and sensors.

The manufacturers in turn add this to the purchase price.

  • Exhaust gas purification: Modern engines are becoming increasingly cleaner thanks to exhaust gas purification systems.

Here too, the costs of the technology affect the final price.

  • Safety: In order to get the top rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, manufacturers retrofit.

That costs money and makes the cars more expensive.

  • Comfort: The list of extras is long: there is a lot on offer, from the parking aid to the digital speedometer.

And that already applies to small cars like a VW Polo or Opel Corsa.

However, these conveniences come at a price and quickly make the new car more expensive.

  • Software: Because of all the technology that is now in cars, they have developed into rolling computers.

And as you know from PCs and smartphones, they need regular updates.

This means additional costs for the industry and the customer.

  • Production costs: Everything is becoming more expensive, and not just for the average consumer.

The prices for raw materials and components have also risen for manufacturers.

Added to this are the higher energy costs.

This also affects the final price for the consumer.

The good news: In the vast majority of cases, dealers offer large discounts when buying a new car.

The list price only has to be paid in the rarest of cases.
