In 2023, 70.9 billion euros were spent in Italy on the purchase of petrol and diesel fuel, with a slight decrease (-0.3%) compared to the historic high of 2022 (71.1 billion).
These data emerge from the Promotor Study Center database created on information released by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.
Of the total expenditure of 70.9 billion euros in 2023, 38.1 billion (fiscal component) flowed into state coffers for excise duties and VAT on excise duties and industrial costs.
Production and distribution (industrial component) instead received 32.8 billion.
Compared to 2022 there was an increase of 22.7% for the fiscal component and a decrease of 18.1% for the industrial component.
The increase in the tax component is partly due to the disappearance of the benefits granted in 2022.
Examining the trend in consumption for the two fuels (petrol and diesel) from 2000 to 2023 - explains the CSP - it emerges that while in 2000 the consumption of the two fuels were substantially the same (22.4 billion liters for petrol and 22.1 billion liters for car diesel), in 2023 petrol consumption fell to 11.1 billion litres, while diesel consumption rose to 28 billion liters .
The price dynamics of the two fuels are also different.
For petrol the average price at the pump went from 1.08 euros in 2000 to 1.86 euros in 2023 with a growth of 72.2%, while for diesel the average price at the pump went from 0.89 euros per liter in 2000 to 1.79 euros per liter in 2023 with a growth of 100.9%.
Also interesting is the comparison between consumption in 2023 and that of 2019, i.e. the year before the pandemic.
In 2023, petrol consumption recorded a growth of 11.5% compared to 2019, while automotive diesel consumption recorded a slight decline (-2.1%).
