A concept that is also popular in Koblenz.

In Paris, SUVs and off-road vehicles will have to pay higher parking fees from September.
An approach that also finds approval in many places in Germany.

In Koblenz, they want to follow the example of the French capital and, from March 1st, charge fees for resident parking based on vehicle dimensions.
For a Smart fortwo you will then have to pay 104.87 euros.
Anyone who drives a Golf 7 already has to pay 179.12 euros per year.
The VW Tiguan costs 196.23 euros.
The decisive factors are the length and width of the vehicles without attachments such as exterior mirrors.

Higher parking fees for larger cars: Federal Administrative Court makes clear ruling
Sounds good at first, but it's not that simple.
The Federal Administrative Court recently ruled in other cases that the same law applies to all car owners.
According to the judges' decision, unequal treatment based on car size is not permitted.
The bigger and wider the car, the higher the parking fees in Koblenz.

Therefore, an adjustment to the fee schedule in Freiburg from 2021 was declared invalid by the Federal Administrative Court.
The associated sharp jumps in fees do not adequately reflect the different advantages depending on the length of the vehicle.
In extreme cases, a difference in length of 50 cm can lead to a doubling of the fee,” the judges emphasized.

Frankfurt traffic lawyer Uwe Lenhart sees it similarly.
He told Bild : “The sharp jumps in
fees
represent unequal treatment.
“It doesn’t work that way.” When calculating based on length and width, Lenhart sees the same problem as in Freiburg.
For him, the Koblenz system is therefore illegal.
