Trailer for the series "One Day" (Netflix).

Since October 7th I have developed a syndrome that prevents me from watching - apparently the collective trauma has greatly reduced my tolerance threshold for the crap of TV, and I find it very difficult to watch anything just to pass the time.

If before I was able to watch a series like "Minx", which is not bad but also not of high quality, and enjoy it, now I can't anymore.

And I'm in a problem - on the one hand I don't want to see only news, and on the other hand everything else feels rude, stupid and pointless to me.

Then came last Friday, when I got up in the morning and it was clear to me that it was an hopelessly black day.

You know those days, which have no explanation and you give up on them in advance?

So like that.

There's no point in struggling on days like this, because they're stronger than me, the method that works well is to surrender immediately, to let go - don't do anything to get out of it, don't try to improve your mood, don't talk to anyone, don't eat healthy, don't change out of your pajamas and not brush your teeth.

Desperately scrolling through Netflix, I came across her.

What a blessed meeting.

From the moment I started watching, I did not stop for more than ten minutes in order to renew the supply of snacks, and in order not to be forced to be with my own thoughts, I simply watched all 14 episodes of "One Day" in one day, about seven hours of continuous viewing.

Luckily it was just me, a blanket, a carb and a cat unlike humans, she immediately understood the situation and her options within it - to join the couch, or purr at the lamp and ask for more wet food from the neighbors.

A welcome meeting.

As in any good story, "One Day", the new series that quickly took the top of the most watched series on Netflix Israel, begins with a conflict.

Dexter (the great Leo Woodall, "The White Lotus") and Emma (Ambika Mudd, "It's Gonna Hurt") come from two extremes of London's society.

He is a rich and glorified child from a high class who lives at the expense of his parents, and has no plans to settle down, dedicate himself or fall in love, God forbid.

She is a daughter of immigrants who carries the remnants of intergenerational deprivation, ambitious and outstanding that nothing comes easily to her.

Emma is not particularly beautiful, in normal beauty terms, she is into guys of his type and the signs of the upper class in general, and it seems that her approach to meeting him is mostly academic.

She is very surprised that he is interested in her, and rushes to understand why, but she did not plan that the sex of the layer and of the layers above and below him would hinder her from her big plans to change the world.

She is not his taste either, but he still finds himself spending the whole evening with her, until they reach her apartment at the end.

The series builds the story between them over twenty years, while focusing on one fixed day: each episode begins with the date July 15 in one year, starting from 1988 onwards.

Thus, in each episode we get a spot on a period, when this one particular day curates the important events for us with tweezers, and omits from the story the years when nothing important happened.

Perfectly accurate casting.

Ambika Maud and Leo Woodall, "One Day"/Teddy Cavendish/Netflix

Unlike the generic products of Netflix, "One Day" does not infest random corrective discriminations that destroy the connection.

If and Dex are an exact casting like no other: the falling in love is believable, the attraction is contagious, the moments of disintegration are convincing, especially of Dex, which is hard to explain how deeply it penetrates the heart.

Both sweep us into the frustrating, complicated but insanely powerful relationship - and it's played so well, written perfectly and cast so precisely, that you can't help but identify with their every word, look and movement.

Beyond these two, "One Day" is full of secondary characters in which thought and intention were also invested, starting with the principal of the school with whom Sam has a fleeting affair, and ending with Dex's agent during his career as a TV show host.

"One Day" is based on a well-written novel by David Nichols (which was also turned into a movie of the same name starring Anne Hathaway), and it is clear that whoever adapted it into a series knows well the excruciating gap between the life you thought would be yours, and what we end up being.

Just as the series shares this misery with the viewer and makes his difficulty easier for him, Dex and Mom share theirs with each other, and bond with each other in a brave friendship that endures through changes and transitions, changing spouses, and various life episodes that include personal tragedies.

In the background is the attraction between them all the time, the feeling of missing that evening that didn't happen in the end.

It should be said: this is a series about a love story, it is not competing in the 'Original Plot 2024' competition.

On the other hand, good love stories differ from each other as much as they are similar to each other, thanks to the small nuances of the characters.

The love story of Dex and Em excels in the area of nuance, pushing all possible emotional buttons and doing it smartly rather than cheaply manipulated.

At any given moment it is painfully clear that their connection is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Be sure to encounter within yourself every possible memory of searching for love, from the innocent "bliss" of youth, intense jealousy, identity crises, partners, weddings, death, pain and helplessness.

A once in a lifetime connection.

There are also some small clichés in the script, in the musical choices, in the direction - but unlike the clichés of laziness, here the feeling is that they did not accidentally pass the editing room, but are there on purpose to connect us to the atmosphere of the "love story".

And also to connect the story to reality, because what is more reliable than clichés in real love stories?

The fact that the story takes place in the nostalgic decades of the eighties and nineties adds charm to the series, whether thanks to the costumes and visuals, or because of the cultural references.

The result is a stunning series, which is best seen in a binge, preferably in the winter, preferably with someone you love (a cat is also considered) and above all with a lot of tissues.

Because let's be clear - you are going to cry your life out, but in an escapist way.

Because it's sad, but this is London and unrequited love, and no matter how hard things happen to Dex and Emma - it's still a great comfort in our reality.

All "One Day" episodes are available on Netflix.
