Highlights: Cost of a driving license: Study shows that it is most expensive in Munich. According to the study, the big price differences are not just due to the cost of living, as they are at least similar in Berlin and Munich. Instead, factors such as local competition and the quality of the driving schools' fleet probably also play a role. In Berlin, an average of 53 euros was charged for a driving hour (45 minutes), while in Munich it was 78 euros. The “Lappen” is cheapest in the following five cities: Berlin, Hanover, Dortmund, Keel and Saarbrücken.

Most people have to save for a while to get their driver's license.

However, in some cities it is significantly more expensive than in others.

Why is that?

A driving license still means a bit of freedom - especially in rural areas, where the public transport network is usually much thinner than in the big cities.

But many people are obviously having a hard time, especially with the theory test: the failure rates have been high recently - and more and more candidates are trying to cheat on the driving test.

Above all, the “rag”, as it is still colloquially called, costs a lot of money - an automobile club recently warned that a driving license should not become a luxury item.

A comparison of cities now shows how much a driving license costs in Germany.

Driving license prices: Comparison shows big differences

The camping portal

Paul Camper

compared the prices for class B driving licenses in 20 German cities.

There was a wide price range: according to the survey, a driving license can cost between 2,700 and 4,200 euros.

Of course, a driving license can end up being significantly more expensive if, for example, you need an above-average number of driving lessons or have to repeat the tests.

According to the ranking, the five most expensive cities are:

City

total cost

1. Munich

4,202 euros

2. Leipzig

3,948 euros

3. Potsdam

3,653 euros

4. Wiesbaden

3,504 euros

5. Bremen

3,471 euros

The “Lappen” is cheapest in the following five cities:

City

total cost

1. Berlin

2,718 euros

2. Hanover

2,792 euros

3. Dortmund

2,912 euros

4. Keel

2,946 euros

5. Saarbrücken

3,049 euros

Driving license cost comparison: Different “basic amounts”, different driving lesson prices

For example, the “basic amounts” often vary enormously (from around 160 to more than 500 euros), which usually include theoretical training.

But the driving lessons also differ significantly: in Berlin, an average of 53 euros was charged for a driving hour (45 minutes), while in Munich it was 78 euros.

To compare the total costs, 25 regular driving hours and twelve special trips were used.

In each city, the prices of five randomly selected driving schools were taken into account.

According to the study, the big price differences are not just due to the cost of living, as they are at least similar in Berlin and Munich.

Costs for the driving license that do not arise from the driving school

In the camping portal's study, not only the costs charged by the driving schools were taken into account, but also other items such as:

  • Official fees for theory test (22.49 euros) and practical test (116.93 euros)

  • Costs for a first aid course (43 to 65 euros)

  • Costs for an eye test (6.43 euros)

  • Costs for a passport photo (average around 12 euros)

  • Official fee for the driving license application (between 40 and 50 euros)

Anyone who can afford it and who has successfully completed the exams will initially receive their driving license on a probationary basis.

Particularly strict rules then apply for two years, which means that the driver's license can quickly be lost again.

If you don't do anything wrong, you'll have your driver's license for life.

But that could possibly change soon: the introduction of a driving test for seniors is currently being discussed.
