Dealers are not very optimistic about their electric car sales: According to a survey, 91 percent expect “poor” or “very poor” incoming orders for 2024.

The electromobility boom in Germany appears to be over for the time being.

After the federal government surprisingly decided to end support for the environmental bonus in December, experts were already predicting a drastic decline in sales of electric cars.

In fact, new registrations of electric cars fell significantly in January 2024 compared to December.

Now the

Central Association of the German Motor Vehicle Industry (ZDK)

has asked car dealers about the expected incoming orders for electric cars - the result is a rather gloomy forecast.

According to the survey, car dealers had lower order intake for electric cars in January

The

ZDK

brings together more than 36,000 car dealerships and vehicle workshops in Germany.

The association is anything but enthusiastic about the end of the environmental bonus for electric vehicles: the “shock waves” this will trigger in the area of electromobility will be clearly felt.

As a survey of car dealerships showed, in January 2024 the number of orders for electric cars from both private and commercial customers was on average around 50 percent lower than the previous year.

Expected order situation for electric cars: 55 percent of dealers rate them as “very bad”.

As the

ZDK

survey further shows, car dealers are extremely pessimistic when it comes to electric cars for 2024: When it comes to private orders received for electric cars, 36 percent classify the expected situation as “bad” and 55 percent even classify it as “very bad”. .

When it comes to commercial customers, people are hardly more optimistic: 42 percent of car dealerships classify the expected order situation as “bad” and 41 percent as “very bad”.

A lot has happened with electric cars in recent years: the range of electric vehicles continues to increase - and a lot is also expected to happen when it comes to charging: 1,000 new fast charging points are expected to be built along the motorways by 2026.

Problem child electric cars: ZDK association appeals to politicians

However, the expectations for sales of gasoline and diesel engines are completely different: in the private customer sector, 30 percent of dealers expect a “good” order situation, 46 percent expect a neutral or stable situation.

The association makes a clear appeal to politicians: “We need a clear plan for the further ramp-up of e-mobility, with stable and predictable framework conditions, especially when it comes to taxes,” explains ZDK President Arne Joswig.

“Otherwise the goal of 15 million electric vehicles by 2030 will not be achieved.”

study by Deutsche Automobil Treuhand (DAT

Almost 40 percent said they were at least theoretically ready to switch - but most of them not immediately.

Almost half thought about switching in more than five years, a third thought it would be between three and five years.
