Fill up with electricity on the motorway: contract awarded for 1,000 new fast charging points

Highlights: 1,000 new fast charging points for electric cars are to be built on German motorways by 2026. The contract was awarded by the federally owned Autobahn GmbH to four companies. The 34 new locations are mainly located in the northern half of Germany. In the long term, a total of 4,000 charging points should be built along the motorways, and a charging station should be accessible every ten minutes at the latest. E-car drivers will soon be able to find charging stations on motorways more easily: four providers have been awarded the contract for 1,000 new fast-charging points.

The goal is completion by 2026.

According to the DAT report, a third of German car owners currently cannot imagine switching to an electric car.

And of those who are theoretically ready, many only want to buy an electric car in a few years.

According to the survey, one of the criticisms that speak against buying an electric car is, in addition to the high purchase costs and limited range, also the immature infrastructure.

Only recently did the

ADAC

complain that there was a backlog of fast charging stations along the motorways.

Countermeasures are now being taken here: 1,000 new fast charging points are to be built along German motorways by 2026.

1,000 new fast charging stations along the highways – which providers won the contract

The 1,000 fast charging points are to be set up at 200 unmanaged motorway rest areas.

The contract was awarded by the federally owned Autobahn GmbH to four companies:

  • E.On Drive Infrastructure GmbH

  • Fastned Germany GmbH & Co. KG

  • TotalEnergies Marketing Deutschland GmbH

  • Autostrom Nord bidding group

Fastned, for example, said it was awarded one of six lots.

The 34 new locations are mainly located in the northern half of Germany.

As the company explained, they want to install “state-of-the-art fast charging stations” with a theoretical charging capacity of 400 kW.

Recently there have been some setbacks in the progress of e-mobility.

At the end of 2023, the funding for electric cars through an environmental bonus was surprisingly canceled.

In January 2024, the number of new registrations of electric cars in Germany fell significantly compared to December.

The fact that Hertz, a large car rental company, has drastically scaled back its electric car plans may not have necessarily strengthened many people's trust in electric mobility.

The reasons cited by the car rental company included insufficient demand, high maintenance costs and low residual values.

The provider Sixt also banned Teslas from its fleet using almost the same arguments.

Range of electric cars: A problem, especially in cold weather

The range of electric cars can drop significantly, especially in winter - in freezing temperatures, power consumption skyrockets, especially on short journeys.

In the USA, there was recently chaos at Tesla Superchargers during a cold snap, and numerous vehicles apparently even had to be towed away.

However, if you believe Norwegian statistics, electric cars break down even less often in cold weather than combustion engines.

Long-term goal: a charging option on the motorway every ten minutes at the latest

It was only in September 2023 that the government awarded contracts for around 8,000 new fast charging points at around 900 locations as part of the so-called Germany network - ten providers were awarded the contract.

The current award is intended to specifically make the highways fit for electromobility.

“Our goal is that the next fast-charging location nationwide can be reached in just a few minutes,” explained Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FPD).

In the long term, according to

Autobahn GmbH

, a total of 4,000 charging points should be built along the motorways, and a charging station should be accessible every ten minutes at the latest.
