The rumor keeps cropping up that a highway speed limit ends at the next exit.
But is that really true?
We clarify.
For Germans it is completely normal, for many other people around the world it is simply unimaginable: a street without any speed limit.
A Czech millionaire with a Bugatti Chiron proved some time ago that you can actually drive as fast as your car allows on the German motorway: he actually thundered along the A2 at 417 km/h - ultimately without any consequences.
However, anyone who travels a lot by car knows that in reality there is a speed limit on many sections of the motorway.
However, an exciting question is: How long does a speed limit actually last?

Even without a speed limit, it can be expensive for speeders on the highway
First of all, it's important to know: Even without a specially marked speed limit, you can get into trouble at high speeds on the motorway.
On the one hand, there is the so-called recommended speed of 130 km/h.
If you drive significantly faster and an accident occurs, it may well be that you are at least partly to blame, as a judgment shows.
There is also the offense of so-called “single racing” or “solo racing”, which can occur if you drive in a grossly traffic-contrary and reckless manner in order to reach a particularly high speed.
When does a speed limit actually end?
Many drivers have a misconception when it comes to this question.

A common misconception: the speed limit ends at the next motorway entrance
Many drivers are wrong about one point in particular: the fact that a speed limit automatically ends at the next motorway entrance is a misconception, as the
ADAC
explains.
This doesn't just apply to the motorway: According to the automobile club, so-called route bans such as speed limits do not automatically become ineffective at the next intersection or junction.
That's why a speed limit always ends with the lifting sign - or a new speed limit applies through a yellow town sign or a new speed limit sign.
Even switched off gantries do not remove a speed limit
The situation is very similar with speed limits on so-called traffic control systems (VBA for short) - this refers to the changeable traffic signs on gantries, which are usually equipped with light-emitting diodes.
If the variable message signs (VMS) installed on a sign bridge are switched off, this does not cancel the previously imposed speed limit.
The same applies here: the speed limit is only lifted again by a corresponding traffic sign - whether electronic or static.

No cancellation sign necessary: What exceptions there are
An exception can be speed limits in so-called danger spots - for example at construction sites, tight curves or in front of schools.
If the speed limit is combined with a danger sign, then according to
ADAC
the speed limit ends without a cancellation sign after the end of the danger zone - however, the end must clearly result from the location.
Likewise, no cancellation sign is necessary if the length of the speed limit is clearly stated on an additional sign.
