The cursed war in which we are based has revealed to us dozens of unknown heroes who sacrificed their lives for the defense of the homeland.

One of the unique characteristics of the Gaza war is the extensive meeting of fighters with the people of Israel, on social networks or on TV channels and news sites - every soldier today has a phone attached to it with a high-quality camera, TV reporters walk around the front line interviewing fighters and commanders, and over the months we began to get to know each other 'personally' of the subjects in the burden.

From the first days of shock, we met the charismatic figure of the commander of Golani's 13th Battalion, Lt. Col. Tomer Greenberg, who led his soldiers from the stormy battles of Black Sabbath, to the days of recovery and then, the entry into Gaza. Over the screens, a young and optimistic man looked out at us, a commander who knows how to cry his soldiers who were killed but also to carry his face forward. Tomer had an extensive historical vision that began in the Yom Kippur War and even earlier, and continued into the battle legacy that Golani warriors are creating in these very days, for the benefit of future generations.

hero of Israel

Tomer was portrayed in my eyes as a charismatic man committed to fighting, who delivered highly Zionist motivational speeches to his fighters.

At the same time he was soft and humane when he spoke to his warrior brothers.

"I am here saying again with my entire battalion: what needs to be done, evacuate, capture targets, isolate, just bring missions," he read on the brigade communication network, in one of his last recordings.

Tomer spoke with determination and encouraged his fighters, he found time to call the parents of fighters who were killed, his wife Asira went to visit families.

All this while all around the storm roars, and the battles continue amidst a terrible national trauma.

At the beginning of the ground maneuver, Tomer said to his soldiers: "I've dreamed of this moment for nine years. We're launching an attack on Hamas's Shejaiya in the north. We're going to settle a nine-year account of the heroic armor fighters. Do it properly," Greenberg said. to his soldiers. During the days of fighting, his image returned and rose before us - until the afternoon of December 12, 2023, when a force of the 51st Battalion encountered an ambush in the Kasbah of Sheja'iya, and there was a fear of kidnapping the soldiers. Tomer jumped at the head of his soldiers for the rescue mission and, as sometimes happens in Israel's wars - He was among nine of our fighters who were killed in that battle. The late Tomer left behind his wife Ashira and 3.5-year-old Arbel, parents Isaac and Adina, and his younger brother Ziv.

The Samurai of Tomer and Ziv

A few weeks after Tomer's death, an emotional message landed on the Grotrali Facebook page: "One of the last things Tomer talked about was his dream, to refurbish his and Ziv's Samurai after the war. We are looking for a volunteer to help bring the jeep back to life, to paint a picture of Tomer The late and travel all over the country as Tomer would have wanted, with the flags of Golani and the State of Israel."

Later I also heard from Isaac, the father of Tomer and Ziv, that the last WhatsApp between the two brothers, from NMR to each other, during a slight lull between the battles, was their desire to renovate the Samurai after the war

Activist Hagit Zeidner, 'the mother of Grotrali Missions', did not need any further encouragement - she immediately got involved in the commemoration project, pulled strings, picked up phones, recruited friends and donors, and the renovation began.

At the organization meeting at Hagit's we huddled around the elderly samurai, Tzachi Madhala lay down under the car, Kobi Milo broke down in the engine, Ziv was a little embarrassed by the big commotion around.

The first thought that crossed my mind was how well the choice of an elderly samurai represented Tomer's modest personality.

Maj. Gen. Golani has dozens of monstrous all-terrain vehicles at his command (Nimrims, Hummers, whatever you want), but as a personal vehicle he chose the most modest vehicle in the world.

Suzuki Samurai combines excellent off-road capability on a spartan and tough vehicle, a unique blend of high capabilities and ascetic simplicity.

This is a complete reversal of the modern 'Shuponi' vehicles, an off-road vehicle suitable for lovers of the country who wish to travel at a leisurely pace, without shying away from challenging obstacles.

It was a complete match between a horse and its rider and now the samurai passes into the loving hands of Brother Zio, he also serves in one of the most combative units.

Rise of the Phoenix

The 1994 model Samurai was purchased by the Greenberg brothers in 2017.

They decided that this Jeep would never be sold again.

Externally, it was in absolutely not bad condition, with minimal rust and vehicle damage.

Underneath the shell there is a lot of work to be done, and excellent people have pitched in to lend a hand, talent and cash.

In an early meeting, the possibility of returning the Samurai to 'original from the store' condition was considered, but it was decided to adapt it for relaxed family trips, with an emphasis on maximum comfort, as much as possible with a Samurai, reliability and offense.

The idea of turning it into a crime vehicle was immediately rejected.

Importer Suzuki of movement devices was fully engaged in the commemoration project;

They will carry out a complete engine overhaul (a modest 1.3 liter, it was decided not to upgrade to 1.6), renovate the electrical system, the interior of the vehicle and the dashboard, to the level of a new vehicle.

Tzachi Madhala is a great expert on Samurais, he took on "everything that is under the floor": he will upgrade the suspensions, take care of the transmission ratios, and solve the big frees below.

Ziv and Tomer decided a long time ago that they wanted the samurai in light blue;

The blue painting was done by Eitan Geyer Vintage car designer, who invested in the preparation and painting of the chassis.

The painting was done in Delek Motors' advanced oven, which was also harnessed to help with the project.

Moti Shemesh (artist and airbrush painter) volunteered to illustrate one of Tomer's iconic images on the Samurai doors.

The intention is also to write on the sides of the vehicle the names of Golani soldiers who fell during the war - in their lives and in their deaths, they will not be separated.

Also in the plan to install a rear differential lock, install a drawer system in one of the seats behind and repair the refrigerator;

The third seat is intended for the lovely Arbel, the little daughter of the late Tomer. Outback Technologies will donate shock absorbers and springs, the tarp will be replaced and a rescue bag will be loaded, a sound system will be installed - everything needed to travel in the country that Tomer Greenberg fell to defend.

continue the project

The goal is to prepare the samurai to lead a commemorative event whose details are not yet finalized - it will not be a formal ceremony but a desert event where Golani people and others, travel enthusiasts, friends and family will meet.

The intention is to outline travel routes for jeeps, ATVs and motorcycles, which will meet at an end point where the memory of the fallen, the legacy of a battle, etc. will be raised. At the same time, commemorative and educational projects for the love of the land, and other projects will be launched that correspond to the spirit of the Major General who became a legend during his lifetime.

In motion devices, they are waiting for the parts that were ordered in Japan, and in the meantime they are busy here painting and organizing the vehicle assemblies.

More funds are needed to complete the commemoration project and the family has opened a bank account to collect donations: Account No. 771134 at Branch 021 of the International Bank, in the name of a commemorative campaign in memory of Lt. Col. Tomer Greenberg. Those who wish to help in another way are welcome to contact Hagit at 054-3341134.

This is also the opportunity to thank those who have already joined the commemoration project: Grutraly, Motion Devices, Delek Motors, Eitan Geir and Moti Shemesh, Masada Tires and Ramla Tires, Tzachi Madhala, Outback Technologies, Rock Solid, ENL4X4, Amira Car Upholstery, Maher Farah from Golani Patrol, Tomer Sigron
