Volkswagen and Mahindra have signed an agreement which provides for the supply to the Indian Group of electric components from the Meb family (the basic architecture of the ID.3 and the latest German electric vehicles) and unified battery cells which will be used in part for its electric platform Mahindra Inglo.
The joint statement issued in Wolfsburg and Chennai states that both companies are exploring further collaboration opportunities in India in the field of electric mobility, to take a decisive step forward in the common vision of e-mobility cooperation.
With this agreement, the Volkswagen Group and Mahindra deepen their collaboration, which began in 2022 with a memorandum of understanding.
Both companies will evaluate a possible expansion of the partnership.
While an agreement between Volkswagen and Ford is already operational for Meb platforms, Mahindra will be the first external partner to use the innovative unified cell, a central element of the Volkswagen Group's battery strategy.
The supply agreement will have a multi-year duration and a total volume corresponding to approximately 50 GWh.
Both the Volkswagen Group and Mahindra aim to strengthen their electric mobility presence in the Indian automotive market and accelerate electrification in the region.
The new partnership will be coordinated by Volkswagen Group Technology and its Platform Business operating unit in close collaboration with Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.
Mahindra has planned to launch five electric SUVs based on its new purpose-built Inglo platform in India in starting from December 2024. With over five million new vehicles in 2023, India is one of the largest automotive markets in the world.
The electrification of the automotive sector is expected to gain considerable momentum in the coming years.

Volkswagen owns, through Audi, Italdesign while Mahindra has been the owner of Pininfarina since 2015, having acquired 76% of the shares of Pincar in 2015, the holding company of the Pininfarina family which owned the company.
