They killed themselves behind bars.
Two inmates of the Epinal remand center (Vosges) committed suicide around ten days apart, Epinal public prosecutor Frédéric Nahon said this Friday, confirming information from Vosges Matin.
A 38-year-old inmate killed himself this Wednesday at the remand center.
He “served several prison sentences for acts of aggravated violence,” said prosecutor Frédéric Nahon.
According to Vosges Matin, he hanged himself and died on the spot despite emergency services.
His lawyer deplored the non-recognition of her client’s “fragility”.
An autopsy was requested by the Epinal public prosecutor's office.
Not a first
Another inmate, aged 23, was also found hanging at the Epinal remand center on February 3.
Transported to hospital, he died there the next day.
According to Vosges Matin, he was incarcerated following several offenses including traffic offenses.
According to the International Prison Observatory (OIP), 239 people were housed on January 1 in this men's remand center which has 253 places.

He then slightly injured a supervisor who tried to help him.
An investigation into the causes of death was then opened.
