A 22-year-old man was indicted for the murder of his girlfriend and placed in pre-trial detention in Fort-de-France, the prosecution said on Friday.
The indicted confessed to being the author of the shot which fatally hit a 22-year-old woman in the face during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday in a residence in the city.
“It’s his girlfriend or ex-girlfriend,” said Clarisse Taron, public prosecutor of Fort-de-France.
“It's an investigation that will probably be complicated since we know that a woman died from a bullet that passed through her head and we know who the shooter is since he recognizes him, but tells her that it’s an accident, it’s completely involuntary,” said the same source.
A version which did not convince the investigating judge in charge of the case who considered "that there were serious and consistent clues insofar as he shot in front of the victim who died", underlined Clarisse Taron.
First femicide of the year in Martinique
Local feminist associations reacted on Wednesday.
“She was murdered because she is a woman,” protested Culture Equality.
The alleged perpetrator went himself to the Fort-de-France police station late Wednesday afternoon, on the advice of his mother.
Justice is relying on the testimony of a friend of the victim who was present in the apartment and called for help.

Known to the police and the courts, the young man was sentenced in 2023 to eight months in prison for carrying a category C weapon. This is the third murder committed in Martinique since the start of the year. , the first feminicide.
