People are always upset about high parking fees in major German cities.

Things look worse in other European countries.

Looking for a parking space is annoying - especially in the city.

A reversing camera, which will be mandatory from 2024, can be helpful when parking.

If you're finally successful, the parking fees can quickly ruin your good mood.

Especially in Munich, non-residents have to dig deep into their pockets.

The first hour of parking here costs an average of five euros - a more than proud price.

Since 2020, more leeway for residents' parking fees in Germany

And what about resident parking?

The annual fees there were capped at 30.70 euros until 2020.

But then the federal government overturned this regulation and the fees rose significantly in many places; in Freiburg im Breisgau, for example, they are now 480 euros per year, reports the

Kölner

Stadtanzeiger

.

In Hamburg, for example, residents pay 65 euros, in Cologne and Munich 30 euros each.

It is particularly cheap for residents in Berlin.

You pay 20.40 euros, but you also have to buy two-year cards, so the annual price is 10.20 euros - a real bargain.

If you take a look at other major European cities, you can't complain about the prices in German cities.

According to the

German Institute for Urban Studies,

the Swedish capital Stockholm is the sad leader when it comes to residential parking fees.

The people at the top there have to shell out a whopping 1,200 euros a year.

But the fees in Amsterdam – 535 euros – or Zurich – 287 euros – are also tough.

The numbers are from 2022.

Parking fees for residents in German cities could rise significantly

One thing is clear: fees will continue to increase in the vast majority of German cities in the coming years; planning for this is in full swing.

According to the Kölner Stadtanzeiger, there is already speculation in Cologne that residents will soon have to pay 600 euros per year instead of the current 30 euros per year - a whopping increase of 2,000 percent.

While in North Rhine-Westphalia the municipalities can decide individually on the amount of parking fees for residents, in Bavaria the issue is in the hands of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior.

In the summer of 2023, the ministry told Bayerischer Rundfunk: “Against the background of the current burdens on citizens due to general price increases, high energy prices and persistently high inflation, we have decided to postpone further development of the necessary regulatory procedure in Bavaria for the time being ." Means that people in Bavaria do not have to fear a price increase for the time being - with emphasis on "for now".
