Two women died and at least 10 people were injured when a fire broke out at a retirement home in Madrid early Sunday morning.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, which broke out around 7 a.m. local time in this establishment accommodating 40 people.
They were able to rescue the other residents with the help of the police, said in a video on X Isabel Casado, a manager of the Madrid emergency services.

One of the injured was in serious condition following burns, while the others were being treated for smoke inhalation, she said.
According to firefighter Jose Luis Castillo, the fire broke out in a bedroom on the first floor, and the second floor was quickly “invaded by smoke.”
The other residents were evacuated to a safe location, he said.
