Good news for iPhone 15 users: the batteries will last twice as long as expected - voila! technology

2024-02-21T09:23:05.935Z

Highlights: Apple announced tonight that iPhone 15 models are able to maintain 80% of their original battery capacity after 1,000 charging cycles. According to Apple, the improvement was achieved without changes to hardware or software. For older iPhones (released before 2023), the original estimate of retaining 80% batterycapacity after 500 charges is still valid - at least for now. This significant improvement in battery life may help Apple comply with the new European Union consumption regulations that will come into effect in April 2024. These regulations will require manufacturers to rate the batteries of their devices according to their energy consumption.

Apple announced tonight (Wednesday) that iPhone 15 models are able to maintain 80% of their original battery capacity after 1,000 charging cycles - double its initial estimate.

According to Apple, the improvement was achieved without changes to hardware or software.

So far, documents on Apple's support page have stated that iPhone batteries are capable of retaining 80% of their original battery capacity after 500 charges.

The company explains that after repeated tests of the long-term battery health in the new flagship series (iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max), it became clear that the new devices can maintain 80% of the battery capacity after at least 1,000 charges.

At the same time, Apple announced that it would update the information on its support page according to the new assessment.

what is the meaning?

"The maximum battery capacity is a relative measurement of the battery's capacity in relation to the state in which it was new," Apple explains.

"Over time, the battery loses its capacity due to chemical processes, which may lead to a decrease in the usage time between charges."

Apple stated that its tests included charging and discharging the batteries 1,000 times under specific conditions and in a test suite that reflects common uses.

When asked how the estimate doubled without physical or software changes, the company attributes the improvement to continued improvements in its battery components and the power management of the iOS operating system.

For older iPhones (released before 2023), the original estimate of retaining 80% battery capacity after 500 charges is still valid - at least for now.

Apple stated that it is checking whether it is necessary to update the estimates for older models.

This significant improvement in battery life may help Apple comply with the new European Union consumption regulations that will come into effect in April 2024. These regulations will require manufacturers to rate the batteries of their devices according to their energy consumption, similar to the energy consumption rating of household appliances.
