From 2024, the reversing camera will be mandatory in new cars.

But that does not release drivers from their duty of care.

There is a risk of a high fine.

Modern cars come with more and more driving assistants.

Some of them will be mandatory from 2024, such as the ISA speed assistant or the black box for the car.

And a reversing camera must also be installed in every new car from mid-2024, that's what the EU wants.

Drivers shouldn't rely entirely on that.

Rear view camera is just an aid: drivers remain liable

Similar to Tesla's often criticized autopilot, the reversing camera is just an aid that offers drivers better orientation when parking and exiting.

In the event of an accident, it does not protect you from punishment and a fine.

If the system fails, the driver may be solely liable for the damage, explains the

Ultimately, the responsibility still lies with the driver.

According to Section 1 Paragraph 2 of the Road Traffic Act (StVO), this has “a permanent obligation to provide security in all directions”.

In plain language this means: Even with a reversing camera, it is still necessary to observe the vehicle's surroundings - for example by looking over your shoulder.

The Munich Higher Regional Court also ruled accordingly (ref.: 10 U 1833/21).

Parking with a rear view camera: In addition to high fines, there is also a risk of points in Flensburg

How high the fine will ultimately be for incorrect reversing also depends on the severity of the incident.

And a point in Flensburg is also possible - even without an accident occurring.

But what fines do drivers face in case of doubt?
