Online driving licences, self-assessment of driving fitness and more information on pedestrians.
These are some of the changes to EU rules on driving licenses proposed by the European Parliament which today adopted its position on the reform aimed at helping improve road safety and supporting the EU's green and digital transitions.
In particular, the draft regulation, approved with 339 votes in favor, 240 against and 37 abstentions, aims to guarantee safer roads for all users, proposing that driving in snowy or slippery conditions, the safe use of the telephone while driving , blind spots, driver assistance systems and the safety of opening the vehicle doors are part of the driver tests to obtain a license.
The text proposes a minimum validity period of 15 years for driving licenses for motorcycles and cars and five years for trucks and buses.
On the other hand, MEPs are not in favor of reducing the validity of driving licenses for the elderly, as proposed by the Commission, to avoid discrimination.
