Good small cars, just over 20,000 euros?
Available at Skoda.
Now the VW subsidiary has upgraded the Kamiq mini SUV and the Golf competitor Scala.
First test drive.
From zero to hero or from a standing start to a megaseller: Only introduced in 2019, the two Skoda models Scala and Kamiq have won quite a lot.
670,000 vehicles were sold by hatchback sedans and compact SUVs, which are built on the same platform.
The car manufacturer is happy because it is good for the balance sheet.
The Scala is particularly popular in the East: in its native Czech Republic, but also in Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
The Kamiq has conquered the south of Europe: Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal - where the SUV is in first place everywhere.
It is also the VW subsidiary's second best-selling model, right after the Octavia.
Over 100,000 compact Skoda vehicles were also sold in Germany.
Skoda's clever ideas: freezer for hot smartphones
Golf competitor and mini SUV: Skoda has revised its bestsellers Scala and Kamiq.

It's often the little details that make a car endearing.
Those at Skoda have known this for a long time - and so the Czechs always offer one or two completely new “Simply Clever solutions” for every model that people are talking about.
This is also the case with the facelifts of Kamiq and Scala.
Because there is not just one compartment for wireless power supply.
The smartphones are even cooled here because they often get hot when charging.
If the 15-watt output isn't enough for you, it's better to plug it in: Skoda also offers four USB-C ports, each with 45 watts.
Speaking of cell phones: There are smartphone pockets on the backs of the front seats and those who have the top “Monte Carlo” equipment even have a tablet holder.
The new LED matrix headlights, which can be ordered for the first time for Kamiq and Scala for an additional charge of 850 euros depending on the equipment, are not simply clever, but simply safe.
Not only do they shine further and brighter, but they also send the light around curves and oncoming traffic.
Apart from the new and more angular front grille, it is also the larger headlights that give both models a more robust look.
On the Kamiq, the daytime running lights remain external.
The four lights that look like crystals are located on the edge of the hood.
Fog lights and indicators move into the bumper.
Light is the new chrome, say the designers.

Air conditioning: The return of the knobs
Most of the changes can be found in the interior: the dashboard is fully digital even in the basic version.
The speedometer is 8 inches (approx. 20 cm) tall, the infotainment screen measures 8.2 inches (approx. 21 cm).
The whole thing can also be bigger: The so-called Virtual Cockpit (10.2 inches (approx. 26 cm) can then also be customized, the infotainment then has 9.2 inches (approx. 23 cm) on the diagonal. Looks modern - that Operation is also easy to learn thanks to the tile structure. Those responsible at Skoda had an understanding of the air conditioning. Yes - there are buttons again, for example for adjusting the fan. Back to the Future: The customers have prevailed here.

Three engines are available in the two models, which are approximately the same size (Scala 4.35 meters, Kamiq 4.23 meters).
They are all petrol engines, either with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder (95 or 115 hp) or with the 1.5-liter four-cylinder.
Available as a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic.
The weakest engine only gets a switchable 5-speed gearbox.
All drives have been slightly revised and aim to be even more efficient.
There should be 4.6 to 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers.
Slightly larger than a VW Golf, but much cheaper: The Skoda Scala comes from the same company, offers many extras and if you can do without the VW badge, this car will drive well.

However, on our test drives in mild temperatures and on mostly flat terrain, we consumed just under seven liters with the Scala 1.0 TSI and the Kamiq 1.5 TSI.
With its 150 hp, we were traveling quite quickly with the Kamiq.
Naturally things were a little slower with the Scala and the three-cylinder.
However, both can be moved comfortably and comfortably.
They are not proven athletes and do not want to be.
The chassis is still crisp enough for ambitious motorists.
Our conclusion about the new Skoda Kamiq and Scala
For the base prices of 23,420 (Scala) or 24,390 euros (Kamiq), Skoda offers two good and rock-solid cars at a fair price, which, if you look at the equipment, is almost on the same level as its predecessors.
However, the extremely cheap entry-level models are no longer available.
Also due to a lack of demand, as they say.
