Not every sign next to the road is important for drivers in everyday traffic.
Not even the small diameter symbol.
But what does it indicate?
There are several hundred different traffic signs in Germany.
All drivers probably know the most common signs - even if not everyone follows them in every situation.
However, there are some signs that are repeatedly misinterpreted or at least raise questions.
For example, the additional sign “Residents free” or the “bending right of way” sign, where many people don’t know who has to signal and when.
But not all roadside signs are important to drivers.
A sign that is not particularly eye-catching only has the diameter symbol and a number behind it.
Who is it intended for?
Sign with diameter symbol and number: No meaning in everyday traffic
Not every sign attracts immediate attention in everyday traffic, such as the so-called station signs, which are set up at regular intervals along federal highways, among other things.
However, in the event of an accident or breakdown, they can be extremely helpful in determining your own location and communicating this to rescuers.
The small sign with the diameter symbol will probably only catch the eye of a few people.
It has no meaning for everyday driving.
This small sign can occasionally be found on the side of roads.

Small sign with diameter symbol indicates drainage pipes
As
chip.de
reports, the small sign has to do with street drainage.
The sign itself indicates the location of drainage pipes.
The number indicates the diameter of the pipes in millimeters - in our example photo it is 400 mm.
A pipe with a diameter of 40 centimeters runs at this point.
If such a pipe becomes blocked, there is a risk that the road will be flooded during heavy rain - and this can significantly increase the risk of accidents due to aquaplaning.
The small shield allows workers to quickly locate the pipe if there is a problem - and, for example, remove leaves or debris that may be blocking the pipe.
