BYD/BYD production line
Who would have believed: the Italian government, the mother country of Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati and Ferrari, is now trying to encourage Chinese manufacturers to open new car factories on its territory.
The government in Rome accuses the Stelantis group, the parent company of the Fiat group, Chrysler-Jeep and Peugeot, Citroen and Opel, of shifting production from the group's factories in Italy to those located in other European countries, giving priority to those located in France.

In 2023 Stellentis produced 750 thousand vehicles in Italy.
However, the Italian government is not satisfied, and as a measure officially intended to preserve automobile production in the country as a significant source of employment, but also intended to put pressure on Stellentis, it is holding talks with foreign manufacturers to set up their factories on its territory.
The Italian Minister of Industry, Adolfo Orso, revealed at a hearing in the Parliament in Rome that the government is holding talks with three Chinese manufacturers and with Tesla.
Tesla already has a factory in Germany, near Berlin, that produces the Model Y for the European market, including Israel, and according to publications, it should start producing the company's discounted model next year.
The CEO of BYD Europe, Michael Shaw, recently told Reuters that the company received an application from Italy to establish a plant in its territory. BYD finally decided to establish its first European plant in Hungary, but it is likely that in the future it will seek to establish another plant on the continent.
The government wants to increase the scope of vehicle production in Italy for 1.3 million cars, a number that she believes should balance the transition to electric vehicle production, which requires the use of fewer production workers.

Celebrating the 500 millionth Fiat production at the Tichy plant in Poland/Fiat
Stelantis CEO Carlos Tavares pledged to increase the group's production in Italy to one million units, a level at which Fiat last stood in 2017 even before the merger with Peugeot-Citroen. Fiat itself previously established factories in Turkey and Poland, and purchased the Zastava factory in Serbia. Today, Fiat manufactures the more expensive models of the concern in four factories - Maserati and Alfa Romeo models, Lancia, as well as the Jeep Compass and Renegade and the Dodge Hornet, based on the Alfa Tonale.
