Stolen in 1995, the red Ferrari 512M Testarossa that belonged to Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger was finally found.
The announcement came from Scotland Yard and put an end to a mystery that lasted almost 30 years.
The theft caused a sensation because it occurred during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola and because in addition to the Austrian's custom-built car, the thieves, probably the same ones, also disappeared with a gray '355 B' which belonged to Jean Alesi.
The two drivers - who in that race obtained second and third place at the wheel of the Ferraris behind the British driver of Williams Damon Hill - went together to report the incident.
The Testarossa was stolen outside the hotel where the drivers were staying, the other car was in the garage.
The total value of the two vehicles was then around half a billion lire. The London Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in January after receiving a report from Ferrari, which had carried out checks on a car purchased by an American through a British broker in 2023, which revealed which had been stolen.
Officers discovered that the Testarossa had been shipped to Japan shortly after it was stolen from Berger and then taken to the UK late last year, so police took possession of it.
The Testarossa is now valued at 350 thousand pounds, over 400 thousand euros.
