There is another setback for e-mobility: the number of new registrations of e-cars will fall in February 2024 compared to the same month last year.

The combustion engines are gaining ground.

The e-mobility boom appears to be over for the time being.

In January 2024, the number of new registrations of electric cars had already fallen significantly compared to the previous month.

Above all, the end of the subsidy for electric cars through the environmental bonus, which the federal government canceled in December 2023, led to pessismistic future prospects in the automotive industry.

This trend is now continuing.

There were 27,479 new registrations of electric cars in February 2024. A decline of more than 15 percent compared to the same month last year, as the

Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA)

announced.

The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA)

's forecast of a decline in sales of electric cars in 2024

now appears to be coming true.

According to KBA,

the share of electric cars in all new registrations was

12.6 percent, shrinking by almost one percentage point compared to the previous year.

The number of combustion engines, however, increased.

77,106 new cars are equipped with a gasoline engine.

An increase of 2.3 percent compared to the same month last year.

Their share of new registrations is 35.5 percent.

In total, the KBA

recorded

217,388 new car registrations in Germany in February 2024.

Compared to the same month last year, this is an increase of 11,000 vehicles (5.4 percent).

In addition, according to

ADAC

, average CO₂ emissions from new registrations rose by +2.5 percent in February and amounted to 122.8 g/km.

Problem child electric car: new registrations are decreasing

The canceled electric car funding apparently continues to have an impact on the number of new electric vehicle registrations.

As expert Wolf-Peter Schill from the

German Institute for Economic Research (DIW)

explained to the

Augsburger Allgemeine

, high electricity prices could possibly stand in the way of e-car growth.

The hurdles for potential electric car customers may also lie elsewhere: the high repair costs for electric cars as well as the high loss of value for used electric cars seem to deter some drivers.
