The Iranian protest singer Sherwin Hajipour, whose song "Baraya" became the unofficial anthem of the hijab protest that broke out in 2022 in the Islamic country, announced that he was sentenced to three years and 8 months in prison after being convicted of "encouraging a protest", "damaging institutions the State" and "promoting propaganda against the regime in Iran".
The court ordered the 27-year-old popular singer to write, among other things, a protest song "against the atrocities committed by the United States".
Lahajipour even won a Grammy Award last year in light of his social activities.
On September 16, 2022, a 22-year-old Iranian woman named Mehsa Amini was killed by police officers.
The world reacted with fury to the death of Amini, who became a symbol of violence against women under the regime in Iran and ignited a series of anti-hijab protests across the country.
Many protesting women defiantly took off their hijabs and burned them in bonfires or cut their hair in protest.
