Porsche is turning up the heat with the Taycan electric sports car.

With 952 hp and a range of up to 678 kilometers, the facelift model is on the Tesla hunt.

The first impression.

Porsche is aiming pretty high with the new Taycan electric sports car.

“Higher, faster, further” – that’s the immodest motto of the facelift.

It remains to be seen whether the Zuffenhausen-based company will climb the Olympus of electric cars.

Because the second Olympic motto is out of the question for the demanding Swabian car manufacturers: “Being there is everything” - those days are finally over in the automotive industry because the competition from the USA, China and Korea has now become far too strong.

In terms of sales figures, the Taycan, launched in 2019, was actually a great success.

150,000 pieces were sold worldwide.

With a minimum price of initially 83,500 euros for the basic model, a considerable sum flowed into the consolidated balance sheet.

The Porsche Taycan “refuels” a range of 315 kilometers in ten minutes

Speaking of price: The Taycan with rear-wheel drive last cost 93,200 euros and is now already 101,500 euros.

A pretty penny – but everything should become faster, stronger and further.

However, the aging electric Porsche desperately needs this, as the journey with the old Taycan 4 S Sport to the presentation location behind Stuttgart clearly showed us.

For the 460 kilometers there and back we had to go to the charging station twice.

Well, the temperatures were at 0 degrees, but we didn't necessarily chase the Taycan down the highway.

That’s why we stick with the keyword “higher”.

The technicians have fine-tuned the charging performance.

It increases by 50 kW and is now up to 320 kW.

Small restriction: This only applies to the Turbo and the Turbo S. The rear-wheel drive entry-level model and the 4S “only” manage up to 270 kW.

But that's pretty neat.

Of course, all of this only applies to DC columns with 800 volts.

Ideally, the Taycan can “refuel” for up to 315 kilometers in ten minutes, which roughly corresponds to the usual coffee break at the motorway service station.

In the future, it should be easier for electric car drivers to find connections, especially on motorways: the contract for 1,000 new fast charging points has just been awarded.

There are still three versions of the Porsche Taycan: sports sedan, and sport and cross turismo station wagons.

Author Rudolf Bögel was already able to examine the new models.

Porsche Taycan now with a maximum charging power of up to 320 kW

Speaking of recharging your batteries.

For those who have never done this before, Porsche even has its own video.

We don't need any instructions, we take a seat in the passenger seat of the lightly camouflaged Turbo S (price from 209,900 euros) and let an expert take us to the development center in Weissach.

The foiling actually wasn't needed at all because we wouldn't have noticed the subtle corrections in the design.

Quickly docked to the brand new black columns - and lo and behold, even in the winter temperatures, it doesn't even take a minute to reach 320 kW.

Porsche guarantees five minutes of full power - in our test it was even more.

Peak performance is one thing, but what does the charging curve look like?

Here too, the new Taycan outperforms the old Taycan.

The battery is filled from ten to 80 percent in 18 minutes, even though the battery capacity is twelve percent higher than its predecessor, which took just under 22 minutes.

Incidentally, the new Taycan achieves high charging performance at temperatures of 15 degrees.

The old model still had to be heated to 35 degrees.

If these values hold up to a practical test, then the hurdle race at the gas pumps could be significantly shortened in order to stay on the topic of the Olympics.

Electric range increases to almost 700 kilometers - in the best case scenario

After the “higher” comes the “faster” – but let’s stick with the battery and focus on the topic of “further”.

The Taycan's range increases by a total of 35 percent.

This is due to the more powerful batteries (either 89 or 105 kWh gross).

Work has been done on cell chemistry, which leads to higher energy density.

Recuperation has also been greatly improved.

The Taycan recovers up to 400 kW when braking.

Even without one-pedal driving, which Porsche continues to reject for efficiency reasons, the car almost comes to a standstill.

This means that the brakes are hardly needed anymore.

To prevent them from corroding, the blocks are placed briefly at regular intervals.

Rims and tires also provide range.

According to Porsche calculations, the newly developed 21-inch aero wheels are good for up to 40 additional kilometers.

The basic model should travel up to almost 600 kilometers, in pure city traffic and with the large battery it would even be possible to reach 678 kilometers.

For electric cars, it's like completing a real marathon.

This color takes some getting used to.

Anyone who says purple is insulting Porsche's painters' guild.

The color is called Provence.

If you want to stand out, you should strike here.

With 952 hp and 1100 Nm torque on the Tesla hunt

Faster is our next keyword from the Olympic motto.

And we want to carry owls to Athens right away.

Yes, Porsche is increasing the performance of the new Taycan.

In complete contrast to the combustion era, power in the electric age is available almost unlimitedly.

One or two Chinese small cars with 300 hp are already driving up.

As was to be expected, Porsche went one step further.

To achieve this, the engineers have designed the rear axle motor to be stronger.

And so the basic model already has 408 hp.

It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The Turbo S, which has a second electric motor on the front axle, needs exactly half the time.

This means the Turbo S is now faster again than the Maserati GT Folgore.

With Launch Control, the entire electrical system raises its ears and delivers a huge boost with 952 hp and 1,100 Nm of torque.

Porsche does not achieve the peak value of 1.99 seconds of the Tesla Model S Plaid.

But these are petite dishes that have no place in Olympic competition.

Gold in the sprint initially remains with Tesla.

But the Taycan could get a third engine in a GT variant.

Normally the drivetrain in the Turbo S produces 560 kW (761 hp) and then there is a driving mode that was adopted from Formula E.

Anyone who presses the red Push-To-Pass button releases an additional 70 kW while driving, increasing the output to 640 kW or 870 hp.

For ten seconds, that should actually be enough for almost any conventional overtaking maneuver.

It remains to be seen whether Porsche will beat Rimac's Nürburgring Nordschleife record.

New chassis and new traffic jam assistant for the Taycan facelift

All models now have air suspension as standard.

If you want, you can order the new Porsche Active Ride chassis.

Here the dampers do all the work.

They are hydraulically controlled via high-performance pumps and can carry out the rebound and compression separately for each individual wheel.

Porsche promises more comfort as a result.

Also on board from the start are a heat pump and two loading flaps on each side of the vehicle.

New is the traffic jam assistant, which is now active up to 60 km/h.

The motto here is: keep your hands off the steering wheel.

And it’s completely legal too.
