In winter and summer there is different fuel at the gas stations.

This is adapted to the temperatures.

The wrong fuel can become a problem.

The beginning of spring is getting closer and closer.

It's getting warmer again and that also has consequences for the gas stations.

During the cold season they sell a special winter fuel.

If the temperatures rise, summer fuel is used again.

Winter gasoline contains more volatile substances than summer gasoline

But why are there different types of diesel and gasoline for summer?

The reason is relatively simple: the two fuels are optimized for the different temperatures and thus ensure that the engine starts and runs well all year round.

For example, in winter, when fuel consumption increases, more so-called volatile substances are contained in gasoline.

They guarantee that the fuel can be ignited even at temperatures below zero.

In the summer, however, the volatile content is reduced so that no bubbles form in the fuel lines.

Winter fuel can become a problem in summer

Accordingly, the wrong fuel in the tank can be problematic, as the European automotive industry association

ACEA

explains.

Winter gasoline in particular has a bad effect on modern engines and exhaust systems at higher temperatures.

Possible consequences include engine failure, starting problems and increased emissions of gasoline fumes.

This can be particularly problematic for drivers who don't drive much in winter, writes

These should therefore not necessarily be filled up during the changeover.

This prevents you from spending too long on winter fuel.

Only when there is no more winter fuel available should they fill up again - no matter how cheap the fuel prices may be shortly beforehand.

The EU states prescribe certain periods of time for switching from winter to summer fuel: From mid-March, petrol stations can convert to summer fuel, and from May 1st this must be available at all petrol pumps.

In some colder states, June 1st is the cutoff date.

Winter fuel will be sold again at the beginning of October, and from mid-November only winter goods may be sold.

There is no deadline for changing from winter to summer tires.

But here too, the outside temperatures help with the decision.
