The growth in car insurance prices does not stop.

According to the survey by Ivass, the supervisory authority of the insurance sector, the average price for contracts signed in January is 389 euros, up in nominal terms by +7.5% on an annual basis, a slight deceleration compared to the +7.9% last December.

In real terms, the increase is +6.7%.

As Ivass underlines "average prices are still lower than the pre-pandemic period. In January 2019, the institute recalls, they were equal to 406 euros".

As regards data on a territorial basis, the provinces recorded price increases of between +3.3% (Catanzaro) and +10.0% (Alessandria).

The premium differential between Naples and Aosta is 250 euros, an increase of 5% compared to the previous year.

Furthermore, for insured persons belonging to merit classes higher than the first, the price increase is 10.4%.

"The increases in tariffs appear completely unjustified, considering that there is no similar increase in accident rates in Italy. The Meloni government must intervene to limit the excessive power of insurance companies and slow down the escalation of tariffs in the sector, especially considering of the fact that citizens have the obligation to insure their cars, while insurance companies must not be subject to any tariff limits".

This was stated by the president of Codacons Carlo Rienzi commenting on the Ivass data on price growth in January.

"The surge in car insurance rates determines a huge hit of around 877 million euros on an annual basis to be paid by Italian motorists" underlines the association.
