We probably don't say it often enough, but geology is truly a fascinating science.
It is still incredible, when you think about it, to be able, by studying simple stones, to go back in time: to determine that the Earth was formed 4.5 billion years ago;
that it is composed of “rigid” plates moving on a more “fluid” mantle and shelters at its heart a core of molten iron and nickel;
that these tectonic plates have repeatedly formed a single continent;
and many other elements.
It is also the study of rocks which makes it possible to trace the appearance of life back more than 3.8 billion years, then to follow its evolution, its “explosions” and its great extinctions, through the study just “footprints” left in the rock.
