The Portuguese judicial police announced on Saturday that they had arrested in the north of the country a member of the Camorra, the Neapolitan mafia, wanted for “more than 20 years” by the Italian authorities.
This 69-year-old man was targeted by a European arrest warrant after being sentenced to 15 years in prison for drug trafficking, Portuguese police said, without specifying his name.
“After committing these acts, he left Italy, and was wanted by the Italian authorities for more than two decades,” added the police in a brief press release.
One of the main mafias
The Camorra, rooted in the Naples area, is one of the three main organized crime groups in Italy, along with the Sicilian Cosa Nostra commonly known as the Mafia, and the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta.
In November 2023, Italian justice convicted 207 people in an XXL trial where the defendants detailed the functioning of the criminal group originating from Calabria.
