The 96th Oscar ceremony has started and is taking place in Los Angeles now (Monday morning Israel time).
The highlight from a local point of view is expected to come already at the beginning of the evening, with the announcement of the winner of the best animated short film category.
One of the prominent candidates is "Letter to Pig" by the Israeli Tal Kantor.
Beyond that, the star of the evening will be "Oppenheimer" which is expected to win at least seven-eight awards, including the award for best film.
Before the Oscars, and as usual recently in the world, pro-Palestinian demonstrators dressed in kafias demonstrated near the ceremony arena and even blocked traffic on Sunset Boulevard near the hall.
They did this by dancing, singing and shouting "Free Palestine" and "ceasefire now".
The protesters encountered increased forces of the Los Angeles Police Department.
One of the protesters, an unknown director named Laura Delhauer, told the New York Times "It breaks my heart to know that taxpayers' money is being used to finance the murder of innocent civilians."
On the red carpet itself, much more familiar names spoke out about stopping the war, including Billie Eilish and her brother Phineas who wore the red pin associated with the calls for a ceasefire.
Rami Yosef, who stars in "Such Poor People", wore the pin and said in an interview to the American media - "The message is 'Let's stop killing children'. We are for justice for the Palestinian people. There must be a ceasefire. There is no other way."

The big star of the ceremony is of course expected to be "Oppenheimer", Christopher Nolan's famous hit with Cillian Murphy as the Jewish scientist who was behind the atomic bomb.
It is expected to win seven-eight statuettes, including in the most important categories - film, director, lead actor, supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), cinematography, editing and original music, and possibly also sound and adapted screenplay, a category in which the favorite is "American drama" .
What did we think of the ten nominees for the Best Film award?

"Barbie": a spiritual collective experience, like a Shabbat dinner
"Such poor people": Emma Stone gets fifty Oscars
"Left for the holiday": this film is an instant classic
"American Story": an American film that is very relevant to Israel
"Killers of the Moon Flower": Scorsese's film Too long
"Maestro": Bradley Cooper knows how to communicate with his audience
"A lifetime": delicate as a branch, as multi-beautiful as a bird, and as unique as their meeting
"Anatomy of a Fall": a film that is an emotional and cinematic transcendence
"The Zone of Interest": "The best Holocaust film since 'Schindler's List'" turns out to be simplistic and outrageous
