Peugeot always knew how to launch spectacular coupe cars, like the 504 in the 70s or the 406 in the 90s of the 20th century.

In the 21st century, everything revolves around crossovers, so the new coupe of the French is actually a crossover coupe: the third generation of the 3008.

Unlike the first generation from 2007, which was launched as a mini van just before the market went in the direction of the Jeeps, the second generation of the 3008 launched in 2016 was a hit.

A tall and handsome crossover, which managed to preserve the driving qualities that gave Peugeot its good name, and even dramatically improved reliability.

Once again, the French correctly identified the winds of change, and the 3008 third generation that will be launched in 2024 comes in gasoline (mild hybrid), plug-in and electric versions.

The basis is the new STLA Medium platform of the Stellentis Group, the parent company that currently brings together Peugeot, Citroen and Opel, Fiat, Alfa, Lancia and Maserati, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge.

Unlike those low-roof coupe cars, the cabin of the new 3008, of course, requires climbing and not bending down.

Or then, you are exposed to an interesting passenger compartment characterized by a large convex and "floating" screen placed above the steering wheel - an evolution of the i-Cockpit concept used in the manufacturer's cars in recent years.

In the spirit of the times, the first version that was released for testing is the electric, in the base version, with 210 hp and an official combined range of 525 hp.

Contrary to what is customary at launches, this time Peugeot included a night driving segment, and another one that was our first introduction to the new model, in a spectacular game between the changing ambient lighting in the passenger compartment, and the lighting of the streets, bridges and houses in Cannes.

Only the next day we got a longer route, which combined urban driving, fast cruising on the freeways and fun driving on the mountain serpentine roads.

Peugeot didn't commit the sin of overdesign, but there are angles where the 30008 looks lumpy/Peugeot

Design: There is a common line that runs like a common thread between the design of the various models that, for the most part, succeed in hitting the target: good proportions, dynamic appearance, attention to details and constant improvement, even when they are forced, in time, to undergo a facelift.

See, for example, what the super mini 208 or the compact 308 looks like.

They also kept the design of the 2008, which underwent a facelift, and were not able to spoil it - and thank them for that.

It is not easy to step into the shoes of the outgoing 3008, an impressive car in most opinions.

The third generation, which still maintains the design motifs of the model, is characterized by clean and flowing lines, such as hiding the side window seals in the doors which contributes to a sleek design of the vehicle's sides.

These, of course, contribute to aerodynamic efficiency and a drag coefficient of 0.28 Cx.

The narrow high-tech LED headlights are also quite impressive.

At the same time, and although it is clear that the designers did not commit the sin of over-designing and trying hard to impress, the rather original design of the wheel rims (19 or 20 inches) may disturb some people.

Even the fastback body configuration for an SUV does not always maintain the appearance of good proportions, in my opinion, and from certain angles the body looks a little clumsy.

I wonder what the new 5008 (an elongated version of the 3008, with 7 seats) that is going to be revealed these very days will look like, without the sloping roof at the back.

The 21-inch curved screen looks spectacular, but will only be offered in the more expensive trim level/Peugeot

Driver Environment:

The new 3008 debuts Peugeot's 21-inch floating curved panoramic screen.

The huge screen connects the dashboard to the driver and the multimedia screen and integrates with lighting that is reflected on an elegant original aluminum surface that extends across the entire width of the passenger cabin, including the front doors.

A nice combination between aluminum, light fabric and designed fabric that creates a unique and high-quality harmony of premium materials in the passenger compartment.

Although, you can be slightly disappointed with the use of hard plastic in some places, but the result obtained, in the bottom line, is very handsome and has a rather high-quality feeling.

The ergonomics are mostly successful, such as, for example, the proximity of the start button and the automatic transmission control.

The driving position is also very good and the correct direction of the seat height and the position of the small steering wheel will not partially hide the dashboard from the driver's eyes.

The display with the touch buttons that select between operating modes and the various systems, replaces the physical keyboard piano and can be customized, looks and works well and makes operation easier.

Adapting to the driver's environment is relatively easy, although, as a general rule, the excess of information and systems in cars in which the driver is overwhelmed today, will always require a static preliminary study and should not be carried out while driving for the first time.

The selection of the level of regenerative braking is possible with the help of levers located behind the steering wheel and it has 3 levels of intensity.

All in all, an environment invested and pleasant to use.

In front, a successful driving position and good space/Peugeot

The passenger compartment: the interior space in the new 3008 does not fall short of that of the previous model, except for a few millimeters in the legroom at the back.

The rear headroom, too, is not significantly affected by the sloping roof.

Similar to the design of the sister, the Peugeot 408 (which is also in a fastback configuration), here too the designers made sure to place the roof down at the back a little further down the chassis.

In the front, the driving position is good and the interior space is good, although the wrap-around center console creates a slightly claustrophobic feeling.

The passenger cabin of the new 3008-E offers 17 different storage spaces, with a total volume of about 34 liters: wireless phone charging that is easily accessible in the central console, a cooled storage space under the central armrest, a glasses holder in the roof console, cup holders and a glove compartment.

The trunk has a usable volume of 520 liters (470 liters in the dual drive versions), and is just as spacious as the trunk of the previous model.

The trunk floor surface can be placed in two different positions.

The rear seat has slightly less legroom, but headroom is not compromised by the coupe/Peugeot design

Equipment:

3008 in the electric version is offered in two trim levels, Allure and GT.

The Allure trim level includes a one-tone paint finish with upholstery that combines leather and fabric with embossed motifs.

The main equipment includes keyless entry and start, HD rear camera, rear parking sensors, LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels and i-Cockpit with two 10-inch digital panels.

The GT trim level adds two-tone paint with a black roof and Alcantara upholstery.

In addition, the rims are upgraded to 20 inches, there are LED pixel lights, front parking sensors, an electric tailgate, heated front seats and steering wheel, a charging surface for a smartphone, ambient lighting and the curved 21-inch screen.

A volume of 520 liters, unchanged from the Kenodem/Peugeot model

Safety:

The new 3008 has not yet been tested in the traditional crash test.

At the same time, it has a full range of active safety systems to prevent collisions, including automatic emergency braking with collision warning: detects vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists day or night at speeds from 7 km/h up to 140 km/h, Adaptive cruise control, lane deviation correction, detection of loss of vigilance by analyzing the vehicle's movements, extended sign recognition in addition to the normal speed signs, vehicle monitoring in a blind spot, and more.

Performance is slower than Model Y and Ionique 5, but satisfactory/Peugeot

Engine and performance:

As mentioned, we performed the driving test in the front-wheel drive electric version, with a power of 210 horsepower and 35 kg. of 8.7 seconds and a maximum speed of 170 km/h.

Although not an overly exciting performance, it is satisfactory and safe for any use.

The three driving modes available to the driver allow energy saving (ECO), normal driving mode (NORMAL) or sharper responses to the accelerator pedal and steering feel (SPORT).

In order to slow down the vehicle, the driver has 3 degrees of regenerative braking available, holding them slows the vehicle down to a speed of about 5-7 km/h, but does not allow a complete stop.

If you want to get a little more excited, there is a version with dual engines and power drive of 320 horsepower. This version will offset your acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds and add another 10 km/h to the vehicle's top speed, when you are on the safe (and fastest) way to negative. A

more sane version, it also has a pair of engines And dual drive, provides 230 hp with its performance data similar to the less powerful version, but it rewards you with a longer driving range.

Range and battery:

The 400 volt high-voltage lithium-ion battery (with a chemical composition of nickel, manganese and cobalt), which is located in the floor of the car, is provided by China's BYD.

If you can't beat them, buy a battery from them.

Later, we were told at the launch, this battery will be replaced by a French-made battery.

In the 210 hp version and the powerful dual drive version, with a 73 kWh battery, the combined range is 525 km. The long range version already guarantees that you will reach a very impressive range of 700 km thanks to the 98 kWh battery. You will get your peace of mind with a warranty on the battery guaranteed for 8 years or 160 thousand km (at 70% of its charging capacity).

For slow AC charging, two types of built-in charger are available to suit all customer uses and charging solutions - a kW11 three-phase charger as standard and a kW22 three-phase charger as an option.

For fast DC charging, the power rating reaches up to 160 kW, allowing charging from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes for the 525 km version and less than 30 minutes for the long-range version. There is also V2L capability for charging appliances and electric cars The 3008 battery, with a power of 3 kilowatts.

The battery comes from competitor BYD.

In the future, Peugeot will switch to self-developed/Peugeot batteries

Comfort and behavior

: relatively stiff at the beginning of the shock absorbers' stroke resulting from carrying a lot of weight, and compromising on non-adaptive shock absorbers, create an imperfect handling in severe road disturbances.

On the other hand, the electric 3008 is definitely comfortable and comfortable to drive, even during a long drive, thanks, among other things, to its excellent seats.

We drove a variety of roads that also included mountain twists and fast driving.

The heavy 3008 copes well with changes of direction, has a precise and fast steering wheel but is too amplified and lacks sufficient communication even at high speeds, a matter that is partially improved when the driving mode selector is placed in "Sport" mode.

The road grip is high and safe and has a surprising feedback from the brake pedal that is not typical for electric cars of its type.

This isn't the outgoing 3008 that excelled on its dynamic side, so don't expect the current one to have any exciting driving engagement.

Perhaps the mild hybrid version weighing no less than the electric car by 600 kg will present an improvement in this area.

Gosh is about visibility, but the 3008 is still better than average for steering wheel/Peugeot fans

The bottom line:

the new 3008 is a product of fashion that pays more attention to visibility, coolness, advanced technology and the ability to enjoy being in it.

In this it is absolutely successful and in its electric versions it also offers efficient electrical systems with a certainly impressive range.

The new model, admittedly, does not bring any news to the steering wheel enthusiasts who have higher expectations from Peugeot, but even so, it is still better than average when it comes to an electric vehicle.

We are already looking forward to driving the light hybrid version as well (light 48-volt electric boost for a new 1.2-liter turbo engine, with a capacity of 136 hp and a match to a double-clutch, six-speed gearbox), since this version is going to be the first meeting between the Israelis and the 3008 The new one in the third quarter of this year. The trams will arrive only at the beginning of 2025.
