With the new Accident Ahead Alert system, another connected safety function is introduced on board Volvo cars.

For the first time, cars are able to warn drivers directly of accidents on the route, using real-time data from a traffic control centre.

The system, which will be available on compatible Volvo cars in Europe, starting with Denmark, aims to help drivers avoid collisions and traffic congestion caused by an accident en route and has been designed to instantly warn the driver of any road accidents occurring up to a few hundred meters ahead.

Positioning data is provided by national traffic authorities and other compatible cars, starting with other Volvo cars.

"Using our innovative connected safety technology - commented Åsa Haglund, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Center - the Accident Ahead Alert system helps Volvo drivers avoid unpleasant surprises, while helping to make the roads safer for everyone".

Volvo Cars' connected safety technology, first introduced in 2016, uses the automaker's cloud and is based on data provided in real time.

The technology allows Volvo cars to communicate with each other and warn drivers of critical road conditions and nearby dangers.

There are also plans for the future to integrate other traffic data shared by other partners in the European Data for Road Safety ecosystem, including national traffic control centers from other countries and cars from other manufacturers.
