The Council and the EU Parliament have reached an initial agreement to combat the phenomenon of impunity for motorists who commit traffic offenses in a country other than their own and therefore driving a vehicle with a foreign license plate.

Two EU institutions made this known.

To prevent reckless driving abroad - according to what we read in a note from the European Parliament - the updated rules will expand the list of infringements of the highway code committed by non-resident drivers which trigger cross-border assistance and which can result in a fine for dangerous drivers .

In addition to speeding, driving while intoxicated or failing to stop at a red light, motorists responsible for infringements such as parking in prohibited areas, dangerous overtaking, failure to provide assistance and entering restricted traffic areas will be prosecuted.

Currently, the European Chamber note recalls, approximately 40% of so-called transnational infringements go unpunished.

The agreement reached between the Council and Parliament updates and integrates the 2015 directive on the exchange of information between national authorities and will now have to be formally approved by each of the two EU institutions.
