The parking disc is a faithful companion of every driver.

But there are many pitfalls when using them.

If you want to avoid fines, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

The parking disc is versatile and can be made of both paper and plastic.

In addition to displaying the arrival time, you can also sometimes use it to scrape ice off the windshield in winter.

Despite their versatility, drivers are at risk of making mistakes when using them.

However, by paying attention to certain aspects, you can avoid penalties.

Form rules: What should a parking disc look like and where can you get it?

The first mistake is already lurking in the color.

We know the funny parking discs in bright colors and with motifs that you can give as a gift when you pass your driving license or for your birthday, for example.

This may be nice as a gift, but as an actual parking disc they are completely useless.

There are clear guidelines here as to what this should look like.

Anyone who forgets their parking disc or does not use it correctly risks hefty fines.

According to Appendix 3 Number 11 of the Road Traffic Act (StVO), a compliant parking disc must have a white P on a blue background and a rotating disc for the time.

The white dial should show whole and complete hours.

The numbers and the font must correspond to DIN 1451, the “fonts for road traffic”.

The standard size of a parking disc is 11 by 15 centimeters.

There are also electronic parking discs, although they require type approval.

The appearance specifications correspond to the conventional version.

It has to be blue and white.

“Arrival time” must appear next to the white P above the display.

If the parking disc does not meet these requirements, a fine of 20 euros will be due.

Time of arrival: How do you set the parking disc correctly?

But how do you set a parking disc correctly?

This has a number wheel with full and half hours - for good reason.

As the

ADAC

explains, only these two options are used.

Parking discs are therefore not set to the actual time at which you drove into the parking space, but rather to the next half hour.

This is also regulated in Section 13 of the StVO.

For example, if you park at 10:12 a.m., you turn your window to 10:30 a.m.

If you arrive at around 1:37 p.m., the parking disc will be set to 2:00 p.m.

If the parking time has expired, you are also not allowed to simply continue turning the parking disc without moving the car.

Even driving back and forth in the parking space is not enough to reset the parking disc.

In fact, you have to leave the parking space with your car and drive around the block or around the parking lot and can then go back into the parking space if it is still free.

This is to avoid parking spaces being blocked longer than permitted.

Forgotten parking disc, placed incorrectly or in a poorly visible manner in the car: What fines are involved?

Anyone who does not use a parking disc where it is required by signs risks a fine.

It can quickly happen that there is no parking disc in the car - perhaps because you forgot.

However, there is also a risk of a penalty if the parking disc is poorly visible from the outside or the time has already expired.

If you are caught by the public order office for parking incorrectly with a parking disc or without one, the fine depends on the duration of the parking.

According to the current list on Bussgeldkatalog.org

, there is a fine of 20 euros for parking for up to 30 minutes

.

If you park incorrectly for more than 30 minutes, you will be fined 25 euros and if you park for more than an hour it is already 30 euros.

After more than two hours, the amount increases to 35 euros and more than three hours of parking without or with an insufficient parking disc results in a fine of 40 euros.
