Every driver is familiar with dashed and solid road markings, including double solid lines.
But what does a double dashed line mean?
As a driver, you see a lot of things in everyday traffic that you hardly think about - but they are there for a reason.
For example, the orange reflectors on guide posts, the number in the name of a motorway or the black dividing line on some traffic signs.
When it comes to the type of center line on a road, for example, everything is actually clear: a dashed line can be crossed, but a solid one cannot.
But there are also some special variants.

Special road markings: Solid line next to a dashed one
Occasionally you can also find the “one-sided lane boundary”: In addition to the solid line, there is also a dashed line on the asphalt.
This marking may only be crossed from the dashed side - and only if it does not endanger traffic.
There is also the double solid line, which, in terms of traffic law, makes no difference to the single solid line, but in principle only serves to clarify the ban on overtaking (for which special markings or signs are not always required).
In addition to the double solid road line, there is also a double dashed road line in Germany.

Double-dashed road markings: Overtaking is permitted if conditions permit
However, there are rarely double-dashed road markings - what does this mean?
According to
efahrer.com,
this is a section of the route on which a certain route is to be tested in order to make overtaking maneuvers safer.
The ADAC
explained this
to the portal.
For this purpose, a two-lane country road should become a three-lane in some sections - in order to create a passing lane.
The marking is intended to make the lane of oncoming traffic clear.
However, you can still overtake on the double-dashed center line - if the conditions allow it.

Occasionally you can also see the so-called advance notice arrow within a dashed road marking.
This indicates the end of a lane or announces a lane boundary.
