With the ID.1, Volkswagen plans to round off the electric portfolio.
But the implementation of the 20,000 euro car represents an economic challenge.
Electric cars are currently not having an easy time of it.
The environmental bonus was surprisingly canceled in December and as a result, sales of electric vehicles fell noticeably in January and February.
Car dealers are also not very optimistic about the rest of 2024.
More and more affordable electric vehicles are coming onto the market.
The Renault 5 alone has already been pre-ordered over 50,000 times.
Volkswagen is still lagging behind a bit here.
The ID.2all is not planned until 2026.
The price should be under 25,000 euros.
But in Wolfsburg they want to quickly step up and bring an electric car onto the market for less than 20,000 euros.
“The working title is ID.1 and the vehicle is planned for 2027,” explained VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer on Thursday at the digital annual press conference of the group’s volume group.
With the small car, the aim is to round off the electric portfolio and offer “affordable electric mobility for everyone,” emphasized Schäfer.
The date was therefore deliberately set one year after the launch of ID.2all.

Development is already underway: VW wants to bring ID.1 onto the market in 2027
The company's board of directors had already spoken about the project on Wednesday, but without giving a specific date.
Schäfer now emphasized that work on ID.1 is well advanced.
“We are already in the middle of it, we know what the car has to look like.” However, it still remains to be clarified how exactly the vehicle will be implemented and where it will be produced.
“This is extremely economically challenging,” added Schäfer.

A price of 20,000 euros can only be achieved with very large quantities, which is a challenge due to the high battery costs.
Four different scenarios are currently being examined to achieve this goal.
“We will make the decision at short notice.” It is reported that VW is also talking to Renault about collaborating on the small electric car in order to achieve larger quantities.

VW is sticking with electric cars – despite declining sales
At Volkswagen, they are not letting the falling demand bother them.
While Mercedes boss Ola Källenius recently questioned the end of the combustion engine, Schäfer made it clear: “The future of Volkswagen is electric!
We stand by our planning.” Audi boss Gernot Döllner also made similar statements.

The ID.1 is one of eleven new electric cars that VW wants to bring onto the market by 2027.
For example, they want to bring the current combustion engine models Golf, Tiguan and T-Roc “into the electric future”.
