If a tire is broken, you need a replacement.
But can you combine tires from different manufacturers?
The ADAC warns against this.
Spring is slowly but surely approaching in Germany.
For millions of drivers, this means switching from winter to summer tires.
A good time to check whether new tires are necessary because the old ones have too little tread.
If that is the case, a crucial question arises: Do you stay loyal to the manufacturer or do you use a tire that is currently in stock?
If you choose the latter solution, you are talking about “mixed tires” and this is prohibited according to the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO).
At least more or less, because what is meant there is a combination of radial and diagonal tires, as the
ADAC
writes.
Then there is even a risk of a fine, and there is also a point in Flensburg.
However, modern tires are almost exclusively of the radial design, so the ban is not really relevant.
The law otherwise only provides a few regulations for tires.
In addition to a minimum profile of 1.6 millimeters, it stipulates a uniform tire size, unless the vehicle registration permits otherwise!

ADAC warns about different tires: Impairs driving stability
Nevertheless, the automobile club expressly advises against it.
The reason: Tires from different brands with different tread types and different rubber compounds could affect driving stability.
This applies in particular to aquaplaning in wet conditions, braking behavior and cornering.
A new tire must match the others.

The situation is similar with a combination of summer and winter tires.
According to the ADAC,
the differences are
particularly noticeable here.
The tires for the cold season differ significantly from the summer mixture in terms of profile and rubber mixture.
Tires with run-flat properties, which enable you to continue driving at reduced speed if you lose air, should not be installed on the vehicle together with normal tires.

ADAC advises: At least one axle should have the same tires
The automobile club therefore has a clear recommendation: “If you have to buy a new tire, you should try to get the same type of tire.
Since this is not always possible in practice, at least one axis should be equipped uniformly.”

The better tires should therefore always be mounted on the rear axle - this applies to front- and rear-wheel drive vehicles.
The
ADAC
also has another tip for damaged tires: professional tire repair could be a more cost-effective option, especially for relatively new tires.
