Inflation and high spare parts prices have recently driven up the costs of car repairs.

The most vulnerable component is the electrical system.

When it comes to the general inspection (which drivers should prepare for), some owners of older cars can get nervous.

If the inspector doesn't give the green light after the inspection, then the vehicle often requires more extensive repairs.

And that can cost a lot of money.

But even with newer vehicles, things tend to break - but fortunately, the warranty usually covers them.

The fact is: Car repairs have become significantly more expensive in the past year.

As an evaluation by the warranty insurer

CG Car Garantie

shows, the costs in 2023 were an average of 657 euros, which is 39 euros higher than the previous year.

International crises as one of the reasons for the price increases

This continues the trend of previous years: Since 2016, workshop costs have increased by more than 150 euros - in 2022, the average cost of repairing damage subject to warranty exceeded the 600 euro mark for the first time.

According to the insurance company, the reasons for the price increase are varied.

Among other things, international crises made raw materials and spare parts more expensive and led to increased inflation and economic uncertainty.

As an evaluation by the

General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV)

showed last year, hourly rates in vehicle repair shops have recently risen significantly.

High repair costs for cars: the engine remains the most expensive component

According to the evaluation, the most expensive component is, as in previous years, the engine.

Its share of the damage settlement amount was 25.9 percent for used cars and 20.4 percent for new cars.

The fuel system including turbocharger is in second place with 17.6 percent (used cars) and 17.1 percent (new cars).

The electrical system takes third place with 13.4 percent (used cars) and 14.7 percent (new cars).

The frontrunner in terms of defects: the electrical system

Due to the increasingly complex electrical and electronic systems in vehicles, the electrical system was, according to the evaluation, the component most frequently affected by defects in 2023.

The frequency of damage for used cars was 22.1 percent and for new cars it was 22.2 percent.

The second most common problem was the fuel system: 17.7 percent (used cars) and 18.2 percent (new cars).

Third place was taken by the engine for used cars with 14.0 percent and for new cars by comfort electrics with 14.2 percent.
