The EU Parliament has passed the Euro 7 pollutant standard.
The regulation that applies to new cars does not significantly tighten the limits, but for the first time there are limits for brake and tire wear.
The new regulations could initially come into force for cars and light commercial vehicles from mid-2026.
The European Council still has to formally agree.

The planned limit values for air pollutants for cars remain at the Euro 6 level. However, smaller fine dust particles will also be measured and included in the limits in the future.
However, the originally proposed tightening of the test conditions is off the table.

For the first time, there are specifications for the lifespan of the battery: the batteries in cars must still offer at least 80 percent of their original capacity after five years or 100,000 kilometers.
After eight years or 160,000 kilometers it still has to be 72 percent.

The EU Commission originally proposed stricter limit values.
However, in the course of the political process, they were comprehensively weakened due to pressure from industry.
One of the arguments was that large investments in exhaust gas purification from the combustion engine would no longer be worthwhile given the phase-out planned for 2035 - although there have recently been signs that the end of the combustion engine could still be overturned.
