Monitoring methane leaks, mainly linked to the production and distribution of oil and natural gas, will soon take a new turn.
On March 4, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched MethaneSat, a satellite dedicated to assessing leaks of this powerful greenhouse gas.
One of the originalities of this mission is to have been sponsored by an international NGO, Environmental Defense Fund.
The project was launched in 2018 during a TED conference cycle and was supported in particular by the United Nations special envoy for climate Michael Bloomberg.
It was funded by philanthropic donations including Amazon founder Arnold Ventures' Bezos Earth Fund and the Robertson Foundation, with support from the New Zealand Space Agency and Harvard University.
