Two new types of diesel are to be introduced in Germany - but not all vehicles are suitable for them.

How do drivers know whether they can fill up with “B10” or “XTL”?

In spring there will be two more fuels available at gas stations in Germany: “XTL” and “B10” diesel.

But only some of the cars are suitable for the new types of fuel.

In general, drivers should only fill up with the new types of diesel if their vehicle has been approved by the manufacturer for “B10” or “XTL”.

But how do drivers know whether their car is suitable for the new types of fuel?

Is my car suitable for “B10” or “XTL” diesel?

Here's how drivers find out

In the future, the two new fuels will complement Super E5, Super Plus E5, Super E10 and Diesel B7.

“In order to avoid misfuelling, EU Directive 2014/94/EU requires uniform labeling for the different types of fuel both on the vehicle (in the operating instructions and the tank cap) and at the petrol station (fuel pump and fuel nozzle),” explains the “ ADAC”.

And further: “Regardless of whether diesel B10 or may.

If “B10” and “XTL” are specifically shown there, the two types of diesel can be refueled without hesitation.

Is my car suitable for the new diesel varieties?

What drivers can do if they can't find a clue

If there is no corresponding information, there is only one option left.

The “ADAC” recommends: “If anything is unclear, drivers should always ask the manufacturer and have their vehicle’s suitability for the respective fuel confirmed.”

Drivers can see in the tank cap whether the vehicle is suitable for “B10” or “XTL” diesel.

The Federal Environment Ministry emphasizes: “All vehicles that have not been proven to be compatible with Diesel B10 or XTL should only be filled with the previous type of diesel, Diesel B7.”

also spoke to the “ADAC” about what happens if the “wrong” fuel is accidentally used.
