The change will make it possible to drive 17 trains per hour on the Ayalon route instead of 14/Reuven Castro
One year late and at a cost of about NIS 2.5 billion, Israel Railways completed the upgrade of the signaling system all over the country to electronic, which will make for a safer and more efficient train service.
The signaling system manages the relationship with the locomotive drivers and the operation of the tracks and diverting trains according to their destination.
In the first phase, the transition to an electronic system will improve the train's responses to unplanned events, such as train breakdowns, and the safety of using the train in the
second phase, when the 2 ETCS system is activated on top of the electronic signaling system, passengers will feel the change.
The system, which was purchased from Elstom at an additional cost of 186 million shekels, will allow for the reduction of the safety margins between the trains, and will make it possible to drive on Ayalon route 17 instead of 14 trains per hour.
This is because until the opening of the eastern rail in 2027, most of the trains in the country pass through the Ayalon rail, a traffic jam has arisen that prevents the addition of additional trains to improve frequency and reduce congestion.
However, this project will also be completed late: when it was announced, the train talked about its completion in 2023, and it will not be ready until the end of 2025.
