It can then convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, brake the car and fill the battery - the “ADAC” gives tips for so-called recuperation.
According to “ADAC”, their strength can be adjusted - because the electric motor then works as a generator and slows down the car - this can even come to a standstill.
In normal cars with combustion engines, on the other hand, the energy from the movement is only converted into heat when braking and the brakes become hot.
Increase the range of electric cars: Drive more distance on one charge with this driving style
The “ADAC” therefore gives electric car drivers the following tips: First of all, drive with foresight.
Many electric cars allow you to adjust the strength of recuperation.
On some models you can do this using paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
According to the traffic club, it makes sense to use them consciously in urban areas.
On the highway, however, so-called coasting can be more efficient - the car rolls along without active recuperation.
In some cars you can also control the recuperation entirely using the “accelerator pedal”.
If you release the accelerator pedal, the car will even brake to a standstill if necessary.

The catch with recuperation is that the normal, mechanical brakes on electric cars don't have to apply as often.
Rust can build up there.
A countermeasure is to regularly decelerate more heavily, because then the mechanical brakes are also used.
This helps them stay rust free.
Of course, this is only possible if the traffic situation safely allows it, emphasizes the “ADAC”.
