How lucky that Netflix saved this great series. Now there is no excuse not to watch it - voila! culture

2024-03-20T21:42:39.969Z

Highlights: Despite minor bumps, "Forever Girls" is one of the best comedies on TV even in its new home on Netflix. The series perfectly combines non-stop hysterical comedy, character development and satire on pop culture. The first two seasons, which were broadcast on the streaming service Peacock and Israel Bis and Hot, went under the radar - not only of the viewers but also of the award ceremonies. This is unusual considering that this is a series produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and it bears the fingerprints of the two.

Trailer for the third season of "Girls Forever"/Netflix

Before the new episodes of "Girls5eva" ("Girls5eva") I watched the second season again to refresh my memory, which also turned out to be an eye-opening experience.

In its beginning, the series described how a girl band from the late nineties, named after the series, reunites nowadays and returns to activity after its big hit returns to consciousness.

In the following season, when the women already have a new record contract, we followed their attempts to write songs for a comeback album (which were super catchy and had great success in getting people's ears).

Girls5eva originally had five but only four survived and are the focus of the series: Don (Sarah Barellis, who just won't stop giggling at how successful she is in her first comedic role), Gloria (Paula Pell, who at 60 shines in a major acting role after years of comedy writing), Summer (Bizzy Phillips) and of course the crown jewel in the series and in reality, Renee Ellis Goldsberry ("Hamilton", "The Good Wife").

Although I really liked season 2 on the first viewing (enough for us to rank it here at number 26 in the series ranking of 2022), I was a little reluctant towards it because it seemed to me a little less cohesive and complete than the perfect debut season (number 9 in the series ranking of 2021).

In the current viewing, I didn't understand what the hell I of two years ago wanted.

If there was any lack of formation, it was expressed in the actions of the heroines, not the series itself: experimenting for the first time in their careers to create music themselves, without being pop dolls at the mercy of sexist producers in a sexist industry.

Moving from one adventure to another in an attempt to promote the new songs, maintain the momentum and regain a foothold in an industry they no longer really know.

It was genius, laugh-out-loud and sometimes very moving.

Just like in the first season.

You blinked and you missed it.

That's how "Girls Forever" was and that's how it is in the new season, which recently appeared on Netflix.

The first two seasons, which were broadcast on the streaming service Peacock and Israel Bis and Hot, went under the radar - not only of the viewers but also of the award ceremonies.

Only the critics gave her love.

This is unusual considering that this is a series produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and it bears the fingerprints of the two as they worked perfectly on "30 Rock" and "Kimmy Schmidt" (more recently, "Girls Forever" creator Meredith Scardino also appeared).

This means an insane amount of blink-and-you-miss-it jokes, an absurdity that always lurks in the margins, a jagged satire on pop culture, and in "Forever Girls" perhaps even more than in the previous ones - great depth and four heroines that are very easy to identify with.

As requested, a large part of this is also expressed in original, catchy and brilliant pop hits that the series creates.

One of the new songs on the band's album (as in previous seasons, there is an official soundtrack that includes them all) marks the city of Fort Worth, Texas as the best place in the world, making it a hit in the city.

A good point for them to start and launch a tour from, but the women find themselves addicted to the comfort of local sympathy and less urgent for them to continue.

This season is not perfect.

Yes, I said this about the previous season as well, but this time there are subjective reasons that detract from the series.

As much as it's nice that Netflix saved the series in a time of need, there are too many Netflix jokes in this case, most of which are quite unnecessary.

Beyond that, the streaming giant is satisfied with only six episodes this time, compared to the eight episodes in each of the previous ones.

This cut, along with the fact that the plot now takes place on the road, cuts from the series some of its significant supporting characters - the men we already know.

They do emerge in small amounts, but not as much as before.

That's fine in the case of Scott (Daniel Bricker), Don's husband, and in the case of the "Lunch Lord" (Chad L. Coleman), as Vicki calls her new partner, a simpleton who works as a school cafeteria man.

It's really wrong in the case of Summer's newly separated Kevin, in a tremendously frantic comedy performance by Andrew Rannells ("Girls").

Kevin was a crucial part of the craziness in Summer's life, being also a retired boy band star who had to reinvent himself after the inevitable end, marry a woman to hide his tendencies, and create a girl with her and a moral network show on a couple show.

What's especially unfortunate is that at the end of the previous season, Kevin was forced for the first time in his life to be a fully present father alone to their daughter together, Stevia, when Summer left to go on tour.

It's a plot line that deserves the spotlight on its own, and it's been withheld from us (Rannels gets the least screen time of any of the other men on the show, so there's a good chance it has something to do with the actor's busy schedule as well).

Good thing he's here.

John Latz with the ladies, "Girls Forever" Season 3/Netflix

But even with these reservations and despite a smaller screen width than in the past, "Girls Forever" remains one of the great comedies on television.

The absence of the familiar men is compensated for this season with two new ones, the most significant of which is certainly an excellent addition: John Latz (Latz from "Rock 30"), who was once a regular victim of the girls' cruel prank program, became a neurotic coward and now receives their forgiveness and compensation as an assistant on tour.

The most important of all are of course the girls who always beat themselves, who never stop progressing and developing, and the series is also amazing this time to show the tug of war in their personalities.

The new situation finds them in fresh struggles: Don, who is newly pregnant with her second child, gives herself a little too much to the lack of family obligations.

Summer finds herself for the first time in her life as a person on her own - without being under the protective and conservative wings of her parents or in a seemingly-perfect Christian marriage to a pop star who actually turns out to be gay - and now she must figure out who she really is.

Gloria has always been a woman of one woman, and now her main concern is sleeping with every possible type of woman - she actually has a list and is of course very funny.

Among other things: knows how to listen (with a big tit);

Bigger than life.

Renee Ellis Goldsberry as Vicky, "Girls Forever" Season 3/Emily V Aragones/NETFLIX

And as mentioned, Goldsberry surpasses them all.

She plays the narcissistic Vicki, the Beyoncé of Girls5eva, in such a total and wonderful way that she drains her of the oxygen in almost every scene she is in.

Goldsberry elevates good jokes to greatness, and projects the total character from it with such perfection that it is difficult to imagine a different dynamic between these four women even behind the scenes, when they are called Sarah, Bissie, Paula and Rene.

The third season avoids the danger of exaggeration inherent in her character by digging into Wiki's sources.

The women's going on the road allows the series to also reach the star's hometown and disprove some things about her.

It's a perfect, smart and eye-opening balance, with which "Forever Girls" grounds the blooming balloon that is Vicky, with the constant fire burning in her and feeding the hot air, making her human and even cute.

This is precisely where the greatness of the series lies since its beginning: its ability to depict a world in such a cartoonish, absurd and funny-even-hysterical way, but to feed it with a deep and sober truth about the gap between fame and crash, about the difficulty of young women standing on their own in the industry, any industry , and how each person's mature perspective helps them deal with an imperfect past.

And, perhaps most decisively: with overwhelming love for its heroines.

For the first time, "Forever Girls" also provides them with soothing insights, bringing them to a more complete and peaceful place that, without a choice, may be a sufficient point to stop at.

However, after another such excellent season, it's hard not to hope that redemption by Netflix will allow the series to reach a large audience (which doesn't seem to be happening yet).

And if not, we'll always have the reruns.

It turns out that they are no less significant.

All three seasons of "Girls Forever" are available on Netflix.
